The patron saint's festival and the ancient fair of Marsico Nuovo
In the village of Marsico Nuovo, nestled in the heart of the Val d'Agri in the Province of Potenza, the Festa Patronale di San Gianuario Vescovo e Martire (Patronal Festival of Saint Januarius, Bishop and Martyr) is the most cherished event of the summer. The saint, according to tradition a bishop sent to Southern Italy in the 4th century to combat paganism and martyred near Pignola, is venerated in Marsico Nuovo, where his relics were translated in 1045. The bond with the community is so strong that the patron saint is celebrated three times a year: on January 26th, April 26th, and August 26th.
The August celebrations represent the central moment. In addition to religious rites, which culminate in the solemn procession of the saint's effigy through the streets of the historic center, an important fair of goods and livestock is held. This tradition dates back to 1808, when it was authorized by Gioacchino Murat: for centuries, the fair was a significant commercial event for livestock, textiles, and leather goods, and it still attracts exhibitors from all over Basilicata today.
Alongside the religious and fair aspects, the festival offers concerts, musical performances, and fireworks that liven up the village squares. It is the ideal opportunity to discover Marsico Nuovo and the Val d'Agri, a land of unspoiled nature within the National Park of the Lucanian Apennines, and of ancient traditions that the community proudly preserves.
The 2026 edition of the Festa Patronale di San Gianuario Vescovo e Martire (Patronal Festival of Saint Januarius, Bishop and Martyr) enlivens Marsico Nuovo from August 23rd to 27th, alternating the traditional fair, religious rites, and entertainment events. The climax of the celebrations is the solemn mass followed by the procession of the saint's effigy through the historic center, while the evenings are accompanied by concerts and fireworks.
The complete program of religious and civil celebrations will be published by the parish and the Municipality of Marsico Nuovo in the weeks preceding the event.
