Four days of faith, tradition, music, and good food in Monte San Giusto
In the heart of the Marche region, in Monte San Giusto (province of Macerata), the Festa della Madonna delle Panette is one of the most beloved events of the summer. For four days, the area around the Church of Santa Maria delle Panette, along Via Panette, comes alive with music, food stalls, and people of all ages, in a festive atmosphere that unites generations. It is one of those traditions passed down from father to son, where religious devotion blends with the desire to be together.
The curious name of the festival stems from an ancient story. In the second half of the 18th century, at a country crossroads, there was an icon of the Virgin Mary depicted with the apostles Saint James and Saint John on either side. Here, the local confraternities used to gather to offer bread to pilgrims on their way to the sanctuary of Loreto. According to tradition, a young woman without food prayed before the image and received four loaves as a gift: the miracle of the panette (small loaves). The news of the graces received attracted more and more faithful, whose alms allowed for the construction of the small church that still gives its name to the festival today.
The program alternates moments of spirituality with plenty of entertainment. Every evening, starting from 8:00 PM, the food stalls open, offering dishes from Marche cuisine and specialties prepared by volunteers from the Associazione Le Panette. After dinner, the stage lights up with live concerts and tribute bands dedicated to the great names of Italian music, while during the festival days there are also shows, entertainment, and outdoor activities, such as nature walks and gatherings of enthusiasts.
More than just a simple sagra (local festival), the Festa della Madonna delle Panette is a living testament to a community that cherishes its roots. For those visiting the Marche in June, it is the perfect opportunity to discover the hospitality of an authentic village, taste local cuisine, and be surprised by a tradition that has lasted for generations. Admission is free, and the atmosphere is warm and familiar, typical of true village festivals.
