The Passionists' festival in Morrovalle, between devotion, music, and gnocchi with duck ragù
In the Municipality of Morrovalle, in the province of Macerata, the Feast of Saint Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows is one of the most cherished events of the year. Promoted by the Passionist Fathers at their convent, over the years the religious festival has merged with the Sagra de li Gnocchi co' la Papera, a food and wine festival that attracts visitors from all over the Chienti valley and central Marche. The result is an event lasting almost ten days, made up of devotion, good food, music, and socialising.
The heart of the festival is li gnocchi co' la papera, gnocchi with a rich duck ragù, one of the most iconic dishes of Marche peasant tradition. At the stalls managed by volunteers, you can also taste other typical local dishes, accompanied by local wines. The kitchens open for lunch and dinner on the main days, transforming the convent square into a large convivial gathering place.
Alongside the food stalls, the programme offers musical evenings every year with cover bands and live groups, performances by local dance schools, majorettes, comedy shows in dialect, and group dances. There are also sports events: from the San Gabriele Trophy, a cross-country race for youth categories, to tournaments that liven up the convent grounds. In recent editions, a dodgeball tournament has also been added, a sign of the festival's ability to renew itself while maintaining its popular spirit.
Saint Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows, a young Passionist religious proclaimed a saint in 1920, is particularly venerated in the Marche and Abruzzo regions. In Morrovalle, his feast day retains its link with the Passionist community: liturgical celebrations and prayer moments punctuate the days, recalling the devotional origins of the event.
With free admission and suitable for families, the Feast of Saint Gabriel with its Sagra de li Gnocchi co' la Papera is the ideal opportunity to discover the hospitality of Morrovalle, one of the most picturesque villages in the Marche, and to experience up close a tradition that combines the sacred and the profane, food and community.
The 2026 edition is spread over two weekends, from May 29 to 31 and from June 4 to 7, 2026, at the Convent of the Passionist Fathers in Morrovalle (province of Macerata). The usual format is confirmed: food stalls with li gnocchi co' la papera and other typical Marche dishes, musical evenings, dance shows, and sports events.
Among the documented events of this edition, on Sunday May 31, the first dodgeball tournament organised by A.S.D. Dodgeball Corridonia together with the Festa San Gabriele Committee and the Passionist Fathers took place, confirming the vitality and inclusive nature of the event.
