The traditional rural festival of the Pisan countryside in Cascine di Buti
The Festa der Contadino is one of the most beloved summer festivals in Cascine di Buti, a village in the municipality of Buti, in the province of Pisa, nestled at the foot of the Monte Pisano and just a few kilometers from the Arno Valley. Every year in mid-June, the Campo Sportivo di Cascine di Buti transforms into a large, convivial gathering place where the traditional Tuscan rural cuisine is celebrated in a frank and familiar atmosphere that attracts both locals and visitors from the surrounding areas.
The entire event is curated with dedication by the Contrada Viarella, one of the associations that enliven the social life of Buti. The contrada's volunteers handle the kitchen, table service, and hospitality, keeping alive a tradition that blends gastronomy, social life, and local identity. The festival is an important moment of aggregation for the local community and a showcase for the authentic flavors of the Pisan territory.
The absolute star of the festival is the traditional rural menu. Appetizers include Tuscan cold cuts, crostini, and tomato bruschetta; first courses feature various pasta dishes and the classic soup. Among the main courses, the house specialties stand out: salt cod, served grilled with chickpeas or leeks, alongside tripe, sausages, and veal or pork steaks accompanied by side dishes. To finish the meal, traditional desserts like the chocolate 'torta del nonno' and the cream-filled 'torta della nonna' are served. Food stalls open every evening from 7:00 PM.
After dinner, the festival continues with live music and the chance to dance under the stars, in the true spirit of a village festival. The highlight is the Sunday evening, featuring the special Cena der Contadino followed by musical entertainment. Included in the rich calendar of summer festivals in Buti and Cascine di Buti, the Festa der Contadino is an ideal destination for those who want to discover the most authentic Tuscany, away from the major tourist flows, amidst good food and genuine hospitality.
