The Partito Democratico's summer festival in Montramito, featuring Tuscan cuisine, political debates, and ballroom dancing.
The Festa Democratica at La Gulfa is one of the most deeply rooted summer traditions in the municipality of Massarosa, in the province of Lucca, nestled in the heart of the Tuscan Versilia region. Held in the La Gulfa area of Montramito, it is organized by the local branch of the Partito Democratico. It is the direct heir to the historic Festa de l'Unità, the political festival that has enlivened the villages of 'Red Tuscany' since the post-war period. Following the birth of the Partito Democratico in 2007, the name changed to Festa Democratica, but the spirit remains the same: one of volunteerism, conviviality, and community participation.
The beating heart of the festival is the food stall, run by local volunteers. The menu features traditional Tuscan and Versilian dishes: homemade pasta, appetizers, fish and mushroom specialties, grilled meats, and homemade desserts. Prices are kept affordable for families, set in an informal, open-air dining environment. It captures the classic village festival atmosphere, where you sit elbow-to-elbow and chat late into the evening.
Every evening features live music and ballroom dancing with an orchestra—a beloved tradition at these types of events. There is also tombola with prizes and games for children, making the festival suitable for all ages. The atmosphere is that of a true community gathering, where different generations come together in one space.
Alongside the social aspect, the Festa Democratica maintains its role as a forum for discussion. The program includes political-cultural debates and meetings on current affairs—such as labor, healthcare, the environment, rights, and local issues—featuring local administrators, political representatives, and guest speakers. It is an open space where public discourse intertwines with popular celebration, following a formula that has characterized center-left festivals in Tuscany for decades.
For years, La Gulfa in Montramito has been the stage for festivals and food fairs that animate the Massarosa summer, a town long nicknamed the "Municipality of Festivals." The Festa Democratica is a key part of this busy calendar, offering a social hub for residents and tourists in Versilia, just a few kilometers from the beaches of Viareggio and Lake Massaciuccoli.
The 2026 Festa Democratica at La Gulfa returns to Montramito, in the municipality of Massarosa (LU), spread over two long weekends: from July 9 to 12 and from July 16 to 19. Once again, the formula combines a food stall serving Tuscan and Versilian cuisine with live music, ballroom dancing, tombola, and moments of political-cultural debate.
The detailed program for the evenings—including guest speakers, orchestras, and daily menus—is traditionally published by the Partito Democratico branch in the weeks leading up to the festival. The full calendar will be announced closer to the event; we recommend following the PD Massarosa social channels and local press for updates.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition (orchestras for ballroom dancing, guest speakers for debates, and daily menus) has not yet been published. It will be released by the Massarosa branch of the Partito Democratico in the weeks preceding the festival.
Based on previous years, each evening will feature an open food stall with Tuscan dinners, live music and ballroom dancing with an orchestra, tombola with prizes, children's games, and, on select evenings, debates and meetings on current affairs with political guests and local administrators.
The festival is held at La Gulfa, on Via di Montramito, in the village of Montramito, municipality of Massarosa (LU). There is a large open-air space with a food stall and nearby parking.
By car: Take the Versilia exit on the A11/A12 motorway, then follow signs for Massarosa-Montramito. By train: Use the Viareggio or Massarosa-Bozzano stations, then continue locally. The area is easily accessible from the seaside resorts of Versilia.
Free entry to the festival grounds. Dinner at the food stall is available at affordable prices (approximately 9-22 euros per person). Table reservations are recommended for peak evenings. Information: tel. +39 389 0431568.
