A popular festival in the heart of Versilia

The Festa Democratica at La Gulfa is one of the most deeply rooted summer traditions in the municipality of Massarosa, in the province of Lucca, nestled in the heart of the Tuscan Versilia region. Held in the La Gulfa area of Montramito, it is organized by the local branch of the Partito Democratico. It is the direct heir to the historic Festa de l'Unità, the political festival that has enlivened the villages of 'Red Tuscany' since the post-war period. Following the birth of the Partito Democratico in 2007, the name changed to Festa Democratica, but the spirit remains the same: one of volunteerism, conviviality, and community participation.

Tuscan cuisine under the stars

The beating heart of the festival is the food stall, run by local volunteers. The menu features traditional Tuscan and Versilian dishes: homemade pasta, appetizers, fish and mushroom specialties, grilled meats, and homemade desserts. Prices are kept affordable for families, set in an informal, open-air dining environment. It captures the classic village festival atmosphere, where you sit elbow-to-elbow and chat late into the evening.

Music, dancing, and entertainment

Every evening features live music and ballroom dancing with an orchestra—a beloved tradition at these types of events. There is also tombola with prizes and games for children, making the festival suitable for all ages. Alongside the social aspect, the Festa Democratica maintains its role as a forum for discussion. The program includes political-cultural debates and meetings on current affairs—such as labor, healthcare, the environment, rights, and local issues—featuring local administrators, political representatives, and guest speakers. It is an open space where public discourse intertwines with popular celebration, following a formula that has characterized center-left festivals in Tuscany for decades.

For years, La Gulfa in Montramito has been the stage for festivals and food fairs that animate the Massarosa summer, a town long nicknamed the "Municipality of Festivals."
