The neighbourhood festival of Manozzini District between Marche cuisine and live music
The Festa della Lumaca is one of the most beloved neighbourhood sagre in Matelica, a town in the hinterland of the province of Macerata, in the Marche region. For over a decade, the Manozzini District has transformed, for four days in June, into a large open-air meeting place where the community gathers around food and music. Organised with passion by the Comitato Quartiere Manozzini, the event is a genuine example of those popular festivals that, in Italy, keep the identity of the neighbourhoods and the sense of belonging of their inhabitants alive.
As the name suggests, the undisputed star of the festival is the snail, an ingredient in Marche peasant cuisine that is celebrated here in numerous preparations. The food stand offers traditional local dishes, accompanied by typical regional specialities and wines from the Matelica hills, a land renowned for its Verdicchio. It is simple, honest cuisine, designed to be shared at the table among friends and family, in the true spirit of a village sagra.
In addition to good food, the Festa della Lumaca offers musical evenings with live bands and orchestras, mainly dedicated to dancing and entertaining the neighbourhood. The atmosphere is typical of summer neighbourhood festivals: outdoor tables, music until late at night, and great popular participation. Over the years, the festival has also hosted side events, such as the beauty contest "Un volto per fotomodella" (A face for a model), confirming its role as a focal point for Matelica's summer.
The Festa della Lumaca is part of a particularly rich summer calendar in Matelica, enlivened by the Associazione Pro Matelica (Pro Matelica Association), which ranges from historical reenactments to wine festivals, from music to nature excursions. The Manozzini District festival represents one of the first major events of the season and, with its free admission, is open to everyone: residents, curious visitors, and tourists who wish to discover the authentic cuisine and conviviality of the Marche region.
The 14th Festa della Lumaca returns to the Manozzini District of Matelica from Thursday 11 to Sunday 14 June 2026. Confirmed on the official calendar of the Associazione Pro Matelica, the festival offers evening openings of the food stand with traditional snail-based dishes and Marche specialities, accompanied by live music and dancing.
The detailed programme for the 2026 edition — including the full menu and the musical groups for each evening — has not yet been published by the Comitato Quartiere Manozzini. Based on previous editions, the festival includes the opening of the food stand each evening with snail-based dishes and Marche cuisine specialities, followed by musical evenings with live bands and orchestras dedicated to dancing. The programme will be announced in the weeks preceding the event on the festival's official channels.
