The red onion and pumpkin take centre stage in Val Cosa
At the foot of the Carnic Prealps, where Val Cosa opens onto the upper Pordenone plain, Cavasso Nuovo has cultivated for centuries a variety of onion with an intense colour and a sweet, delicate flavour: the Red Onion of Cavasso Nuovo and Val Cosa, recognised as a Slow Food Presidium. This iconic vegetable, alongside pumpkin, is celebrated at the Autumn Festival, organised by the Red Onion Producers' Association with the Municipality of Cavasso Nuovo and local associations.
The event is held every year on the first weekend of October, coinciding with the feast of the patron saint San Remigio: a typical blend of Friulian communities, where the agricultural and religious calendars merge in the same celebration. Stalls selling typical products and crafts line the village streets, while food and wine stalls offer menus featuring red onion, pumpkin, and local traditional specialities.
The Autumn Festival is not just about food. The programme includes conferences dedicated to the history and value of the red onion โ complete with a documentary made by the Producers' Association โ exhibitions, activities for children, and musical performances by local artists. Over the years, the festival has also attracted the historic train from Fondazione FS, stopping at Cavasso for those arriving from Treviso along the picturesque foothill line.
Cavasso Nuovo is a gateway to the Pordenone foothills and Val Cosa, a land of castles, springs, and ancient crafts. Visiting the Autumn Festival means discovering a lesser-known, authentic Friuli, where a small vegetable has become the symbol of an entire community.
The 12th edition of the Autumn Festival is expected on the first weekend of October 2026, following the fixed calendar that has always linked the event to the patronal feast of San Remigio. The festival confirms its tried-and-tested format: producers' stands, food stalls with menus based on red onion and pumpkin, cultural events, and musical entertainment along the village streets.
The detailed programme will be announced in the coming weeks. Based on previous editions, the festival typically spans three days with:
Cavasso Nuovo is reached from the Pordenone foothills; the reference motorway exit is A28, continuing towards Val Cosa. A stop for the historic train is possible on dedicated editions.
