The Salento meatball celebration in the ancient village of Felline, Alliste
The Meatball Festival has been held since 1997 in Felline, a charming hamlet in the municipality of Alliste, in lower Salento in the province of Lecce. Every summer, the event brings to life the characteristic historic center of the village, a maze of narrow streets, ancient courtyards, and traditional courtyard houses that gather around the small square dominated by the enchanting 12th-century castle. Walking through the illuminated alleys, visitors also discover the hidden heritage of Felline, such as the underground oil mill and the glimpses of the medieval village.
The signature dish of the festival is, of course, the meatball, prepared in dozens of Salento-style variations. At the numerous food stands, you can taste meatballs in tomato sauce or fried, horse meat meatballs, pork meatballs, and the tasty eggplant meatballs, seasoned with spices and sauces, according to classic recipes or more experimental pairings. To complete the experience, there is the inevitable local pecorino cheese, local wine, and other typical dishes of Apulian cuisine, in a culinary journey that highlights zero-kilometer products thanks to the collaboration with Coldiretti and local producers.
The Meatball Festival is not just about gastronomy: the evenings are marked by the notes of the pizzica and Salento folk music, with groups that draw the public into traditional dances and rhythms until late at night. Over the various editions, local pizzica groups have performed, giving the village an authentic festive atmosphere that unites residents, tourists, and fans of folk traditions.
The event, organized by the Pro Loco Alliste Felline APS with the patronage of the Municipality of Alliste, adheres to the EcoFesta Puglia brand, the regional initiative that promotes festivals and events with a low environmental impact, with attention to waste sorting and waste reduction.
With over twenty-five editions behind it, the Felline Meatball Festival has become a classic of the Salento summer, capable of attracting visitors from all over Puglia and beyond. It is the ideal opportunity to discover an authentic village, away from the large tourist flows, and to enjoy an evening of taste, music, and conviviality in the spirit of Salento's roots.
The Felline Meatball Festival returns in the summer of 2026 to the historic center of Felline, in Alliste. According to the Salento events calendar, the appointment is expected tentatively for August 6, 2026, but the definitive dates must be confirmed by the Pro Loco Alliste Felline.
