The horse and rider cavalcade and the procession of the Crucifix in Cammarata
In the heart of the Sicani Mountains, in the village of Cammarata (Agrigento province, Sicily), the Feast of the SS. Crocifisso degli Angeli is considered the community's oldest and most deeply rooted religious tradition. The Crucifix, a 17th-century wooden statue, owes its name to the small angels crowning the cross; it is kept and venerated in the Church of San Vito, around which the most solemn moments of the festival revolve.
The most characteristic and anticipated element is the Cavalcade, a folkloric procession where festively decorated horses and riders parade through crowds lining the narrow streets of the historic center. By tradition, the cavalcade starts from the home of the Paliante, the individual or family who has pledged an offering as a sign of gratitude for a grace received—such as recovery from a serious illness, the birth of a child, or a narrow escape from danger—and concludes near the church, where the offering is presented. It is a rite that weaves together popular devotion, local identity, and collective celebration.
The highlight is the procession of the Crucifix: the statue is placed on an evocative 1863 wooden float (vara) and carried on shoulders through the characteristic streets of Cammarata, accompanied by the cries of faith from the bearers and the festive ringing of bells. The main day opens at dawn with the 'alborata' and unfolds with solemn masses, blessings, roaming music through the town streets, and the arrival of the Palio, ending with a fireworks display that closes the festivities.
The festival traditionally falls on the last Sunday of May, but in recent years it has been moved to June: in 2025, the festivities were postponed to late June due to restoration work at the Church of San Vito. It is a deeply significant event for the community of Cammarata and the entire Sicani Mountains area, attracting faithful, returning emigrants, and visitors curious to discover one of the most evocative equestrian festivals in the province of Agrigento.
Perched on the slopes of Mount Cammarata, the village offers medieval alleys, panoramic views, and a strong Sicani food and wine tradition. The Crucifix festival is the best opportunity to experience the authenticity of the town, amidst faith, folklore, and hospitality.
The 2026 edition of the Feast of the SS. Crocifisso degli Angeli in Cammarata focuses on two days, Sunday, June 21, and Monday, June 22, with the historic center and the Church of San Vito as the heart of the festivities. The program alternates between religious and folkloric moments, culminating in the Cavalcade and the procession of the wooden statue on the 1863 float.
Cammarata is located in the hinterland of the province of Agrigento, in the Sicani Mountains. By car, it can be reached via the SS189 (Palermo–Agrigento) taking the exit for Cammarata–San Giovanni Gemini. It is about 1 hour from Palermo and 50 minutes from Agrigento. The reference train station is Acquaviva-Casteltermini-Cammarata.
The festival takes place in the historic center, which features narrow and steep streets: we recommend parking in areas outside the village and exploring on foot. Wear comfortable footwear. The Cavalcade and the procession draw large crowds: it is best to arrive early to secure a good viewing spot along the route.
All religious and folkloric events are free and open to the public.
