The patronal feast of Brolo: faith, tradition, and spectacle in the Nebrodi mountains
The Feast of the Madonna Annunziata is the primary religious and cultural event in Brolo, a coastal village in the Province of Messina overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, at the foot of the Nebrodi mountains. The Madonna Annunziata is the town's patron saint: although the liturgical date of the Annunciation is March 25th, the festivities have been moved to the last Sunday of May for many years to ensure better weather for outdoor functions and events.
The festival is much more than a formal religious appointment; it is a moment of collective memory and identity, where the community of Brolo comes together. Liturgical rites, overseen by parish priest Father Enzo Caruso, mark several days of spiritual preparation, including the recitation of the Rosary, Holy Masses animated by local neighborhoods and parish groups, Eucharistic adoration, and the evocative enthronement of the Madonna's statue in the Mother Church.
The most anticipated moment is the procession on Sunday afternoon: the statue of the Madonna Annunziata travels through the town streets accompanied by the devotion of the faithful, traditional hymns, and an intergenerational participation that makes this moment one of the most authentic symbols of the Brolese community. In the morning, the marching band tours the neighborhoods, bringing festive traditional tunes to the streets.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival offers the warmth of Sicilian popular tradition: live music evenings, cabaret shows, the classic evening bingo, and at midnight, the fireworks display that lights up the sky over the seafront. It is an opportunity for families and those living away to reunite in their hometown, in a festive atmosphere that intertwines the sacred and the profane, true to the authentic tradition of Sicilian village patronal feasts.
Visiting Brolo during the festival is also an opportunity to discover a charming village on the Tyrrhenian side of Messina, dominated by its medieval castle, with beaches and the Nebrodi hinterland just a few kilometers away. An experience that combines spirituality, Sicilian hospitality, and landscape in the heart of northern Sicily.
The 2026 edition opened on Thursday, May 28 with the recitation of the Rosary and Mass with Eucharistic adoration, continuing on Friday, May 29 with the Rosary and Holy Mass animated by parish groups. On Saturday, May 30, the vigil Mass hosted the traditional Wedding Anniversary Feast, with couples renewing their vows; in the evening, at 9:00 PM, the musical show by Onda Sonora followed by cabaret from Mariuccia Cannata. Sunday, May 31, the main day, featured morning Mass at Piana (8:30 AM), the marching band parade through the neighborhoods (9:00 AM), solemn Mass in the Mother Church (10:30 AM), and at 5:30 PM, the procession of the Madonna Annunziata statue through the town streets. The evening concluded with the Atmosfera Blu show (9:30 PM), the traditional bingo (11:30 PM), and at midnight, the fireworks by the Castorino Natale company.
Brolo is located on the Tyrrhenian coast of the Province of Messina. By car, it can be reached via the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway (Brolo exit). By train, the Brolo-Ficarra station is on the Messina-Palermo Tyrrhenian line. The nearest airports are Catania-Fontanarossa and Palermo-Punta Raisi.
The festivities take place during the last week of May, culminating on the last Sunday of the month. Admission to all functions and events is free.
The late afternoon procession and the midnight fireworks are not to be missed. It is advisable to arrive early in the town center and along the seafront.
