The patron saint festival of Ribera, held every December 6th
The Saint Nicholas Patronal Festival is the most cherished devotional event in Ribera, a town in the province of Agrigento known throughout Sicily as the "city of oranges." Every year, on December 6th, the entire town gathers around its patron saint, Saint Nicholas of Bari, for a day that blends religious observance with popular tradition.
The devotion to Saint Nicholas in Ribera dates back to 1644, when the saint was officially proclaimed patron and protector of the city through a public act drawn up by notary Vincenzo Scoma of Caltabellotta. A church dedicated to him had already been built in 1637. After centuries of ups and downs, the festival saw a full revival in the late 1980s, coinciding with the inauguration of the new Church of Saint Nicholas in the Cozzo di Mastro Giovanni district, which is now the beating heart of the celebrations.
The festival day follows a long-established ceremonial. From the early morning, the firing of cannons and the marching band announce the occasion through the town streets. This is followed by a solemn Mass in the church dedicated to the saint, celebrated in the presence of city authorities, featuring the evocative entrustment ceremony where the mayor symbolically hands the keys of the city to Saint Nicholas. The traditional blessed bread of Saint Nicholas is then distributed to the faithful.
The highlight is the afternoon procession: the statue of the saint is carried on shoulders through the main streets of the center, accompanied by confraternities, the faithful, and the band, amidst religious hymns, prayers, and moments of communal reflection. The celebrations are enriched by cultural events and, according to tradition, gastronomic evenings dedicated to local flavors such as ricotta and pani cunzatu, concluding with a fireworks display.
More than just a religious event, the Saint Nicholas Festival represents a moment of shared identity for Ribera and the entire Agrigento region of Sicily, where popular faith merges with a sense of community belonging. It is an authentic opportunity to discover the traditions of a village in the heart of Western Sicily.
The 2026 edition of the Saint Nicholas Patronal Festival in Ribera will take place on Sunday, December 6, 2026, following the established tradition that links the celebration to the saint's liturgical day. As every year, the morning cannon fire, the marching band parade, the solemn Mass with the entrustment ceremony, and the afternoon procession of the statue through the main streets of the historic center are expected.
At the moment, the complete civil and religious program for the 2026 edition has not yet been released by the organization: details on times, side events, and the fireworks display will be communicated by the Municipality of Ribera in the weeks leading up to the festival.
The festival is celebrated every year on December 6th, the liturgical feast day of Saint Nicholas of Bari.
