About Saint Vincent Ferrer in April

Every spring, Castell'Umberto, a small village in the Nebrodi mountains of the Messina province, renews its centuries-old devotion to Saint Vincent Ferrer, the "Saint of Miracles," venerated here since the 15th century. The April liturgical celebration is the first of two annual commemorations dedicated to the patron saint (the second, larger event takes place in late August) and spans two days of solemn Masses, the evocative procession of the vara through the village streets, the blessing at the Serro di San Vincenzo, and a fireworks display lighting up the mountain sky.

A devotion spanning centuries

In Castell'Umberto, a village in the Nebrodi mountains in the province of Messina, the figure of Saint Vincent Ferrer is much more than a liturgical reference: he is the heart of the community's identity. Devotion to the Dominican saint dates back to the 15th century, when a blessed friar of the Order of Preachers, originally from Pistoia, founded a convent in the ancient village of Castania and brought the saint's relics, establishing him as the town's patron. Since then, the community has venerated him as the "Saint of Miracles" due to the numerous wonders passed down through popular tradition.

The April Feast

The April festivities represent the liturgical commemoration of the patron saint and constitute the first of two annual celebrations dedicated to Saint Vincent (the second, more solemn and widely attended, takes place in late August). The festival unfolds over two days: the vigil, dedicated to First Vespers, evening Mass, and the procession of the relics, and the feast day itself, featuring solemn Masses and the grand procession of the statue through the historic center.

The procession of the vara

The most anticipated moment is the departure of the fercolo (the "vara") carrying the statue of the saint, borne on the shoulders of devotees amidst the constant ringing of bells. The procession winds through the village and stops at two symbolic locations: the Serro di San Vincenzo, a panoramic viewpoint where the priest imparts a solemn blessing upon the territory with the relics, and Piazza IV Novembre, where the final farewell to the faithful takes place. Along the streets, there is no shortage of firecrackers, a marching band, and, upon the return of the vigil procession, a fireworks display by the historic local firm "Russo".

A community celebration

The celebration draws numerous emigrants and devotees from across the Nebrodi region, creating an atmosphere of joy and reflection. The feast of Saint Vincent Ferrer is not merely a religious appointment, but an opportunity to rediscover roots, family ties, and traditions that have marked life in the municipality of Castell'Umberto, Sicily, for generations.

2026 Festivities

In 2026, the liturgical feast of Saint Vincent Ferrer in Castell'Umberto was celebrated on April 6 and 7: the canonical date of April 5 coincided with Easter Sunday, so the celebrations were postponed to the following Monday and Tuesday. The vigil (April 6) saw the placement of the saint's image on the vara, First Vespers, and the 6:30 PM Mass, followed by the procession of the relics and, upon return, the fireworks display by the "Russo" firm.
