About Feast of Saint Proculus

The Feast of Saint Proculus is the most heartfelt tradition in Pozzuoli, a city in the Phlegraean Fields within the Metropolitan City of Naples. The patron saint, a martyr from 305 AD, is celebrated on November 16th with liturgies at the Rione Terra Cathedral Basilica, while on the second Sunday of May, the statues of Saint Proculus and Saint Januarius are carried in a procession through the historic center down to the sea. Devotion, civic memory, and popular tradition intertwine in these two events that mark the Puteolan year.

The patronal feast of Pozzuoli

The Feast of Saint Proculus is the most significant identity-defining event for Pozzuoli, a city in the Metropolitan City of Naples, in Campania, overlooking the gulf of the same name in the heart of the Phlegraean Fields. The patron saint, a deacon and martyr, is honored by the locals in two distinct moments of the year: the liturgical feast on November 16th and the procession of the Patron Saints on the second Sunday of May, when the statues leave the Cathedral Basilica and travel through the streets of the lower city. This is not a staged festival, but a tradition the community has upheld for centuries, one that still brings traffic to a halt and unites the people of Pozzuoli today.

Who was Saint Proculus

According to tradition, Saint Proculus was martyred in 305 AD, during the Diocletianic Persecutions, alongside his companions known as the «seven Puteolan martyrs»: among them Eutychius, Acutius, Desiderius, Sosius, Celcus, and Saint Januarius himself, now the patron saint of Naples. Local memory holds that the martyrs were imprisoned in the Flavian Amphitheatre and later beheaded near the Solfatara. The Roman Martyrology places the feast of Saint Proculus on October 18th, but in 1718, Pozzuoli moved the celebration to November 16th, when agricultural work had concluded and the population could fully participate in the services.

The procession of the Patron Saints, the second Sunday of May

The most spectacular moment of Puteolan devotion does not fall in November, however: it is the procession on the second Sunday of May, presided over by the Bishop of Pozzuoli and Ischia, which carries the statues of the patron saints through the streets of the center. The rite spans three days: on Saturday, the statue of Saint Januarius is welcomed into the Basilica of Saint Proculus the Martyr at Rione Terra; on Sunday, the procession sets off; on Monday, Saint Januarius returns to his own sanctuary.

The traditional route of the procession touches the symbolic landmarks of the old city:

  • via Ripa and via San Proculus, descending from Rione Terra;
  • Largo Sedile dei Nobili and via Marconi;
  • corso della Repubblica and piazza della Repubblica, with a brief stop on the churchyard of the Santa Maria delle Grazie parish;
  • largo Santa Maria delle Grazie and via Cesare Augusto, before returning toward the Cathedral Basilica;
  • the conclusion at the Cathedral Basilica, where Holy Mass is celebrated.

During the procession, vehicular traffic is prohibited on the affected streets, and the churches of the Pozzuoli deanery remain closed in the afternoon so the entire community can join the procession.

November 16th, the patron saint's day

November 16th does not feature a procession but is the true liturgical day: the Solemn Mass in the Cathedral Basilica, celebrated by the Bishop, gathers the faithful around the figure of the martyr. Until 1970, before the evacuation of Rione Terra due to bradyseism, the alleys of the ancient acropolis were filled with pilgrims heading to the Cathedral. Devotees chant the traditional invocation to the saint, asking for «living Faith, firm Hope, and perfect Charity». A popular Puteolan saying is also linked to this date: «San Proculus is a bed-wetter», because November 16th almost unfailingly brings rain.

The city in celebration

Alongside the religious dimension, the patron saint's day has taken on a civic and popular face, with the historic center animated throughout the day. In recent editions, the city program has included a food and wine market by local farmers in the municipal villa, book and comic book exhibitions in piazza della Repubblica, games and entertainment for children, hobbyist and local craft stalls, and live concerts in the historic Cassa Armonica, with shops remaining open until evening.

Rione Terra, the ancient heart of the feast

Those who arrive in Pozzuoli for Saint Proculus find much more than a religious celebration. Rione Terra, the Roman acropolis upon which the city grew, guards the remains of the Augustan temple beneath the Cathedral: a rare case of continuity between pagan and Christian worship. Nearby, the Phlegraean Fields offer the Flavian Amphitheatre, the Macellum known as the Temple of Serapis, and the Solfatara. The celebrations are open to everyone and take place largely outdoors: an opportunity to understand the soul of this maritime and volcanic city in Campania.

Feast of Saint Proculus — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Feast of Saint Proculus in Pozzuoli has not yet been officially announced. The Puteolan devotional calendar traditionally includes the procession of the Patron Saints on the second Sunday of May and the solemnity of the patron saint on November 16th, with Mass at the Cathedral Basilica in Rione Terra. Dates and the detailed program will be announced by the Diocese of Pozzuoli: we recommend checking official channels before planning your visit.

At the moment, no official dates have been published for the 2026 edition of the Feast of Saint Proculus in Pozzuoli. However, the event follows a consolidated calendar: the procession of the Patron Saints, with the statues of Saint Proculus and Saint Januarius, is held on the second Sunday of May and involves the historic center from Rione Terra to piazza della Repubblica, while the liturgical solemnity of the patron saint falls on November 16th with Mass at the Cathedral Basilica.

The civic program accompanying the patron's day, with markets, crafts, and music in the squares, is usually released by local associations only in the weeks prior. We will update this page as soon as the Diocese of Pozzuoli and the Municipality announce the dates and initiatives for 2026.
