About U Quadrittu of Saponara

In Saponara, a medieval village in the province of Messina, one of Sicily's most evocative rituals returns from December 6th to 8th. Three consecutive days intertwine devotion to the patron saint, Saint Nicholas, the ancient Feast of U Quadrittu with its torchlit night procession, and the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. It is a heritage of popular faith preserved for centuries by the Saponara community, where the fire of the torchbearers and the silver bust of the saint tell a unique story of identity.

Three days of devotion in Saponara

In the heart of the Peloritani mountains, the village of Saponara, in the province of Messina, celebrates one of the most deeply felt triptychs of religious festivals in all of Sicily every year from December 6th to 8th. The Feast of Saint Nicholas, the Feast of U Quadrittu, and the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception follow one another over three consecutive days, enlivening the town's streets with processions, ancient rites, and deeply rooted popular participation.

December 6th: Saint Nicholas, Patron Saint

The first day is dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Bari, the patron saint of Saponara. Preceded by a novena celebrated in the Mother Church of Piazza Matrice, the festival culminates on the evening of December 6th with the procession of the silver bust of the saint and his relic, which travels through the village streets immediately following the solemn Eucharistic celebration. It is a moment of reflection and strong community identity.

December 7th: U Quadrittu, fire and devotion

The second evening is the beating heart of the festival: U Quadrittu, an ancient rite that dates back to the 17th and 18th centuries. According to oral tradition, it was the town's charcoal burners—excluded from civil and religious life—who originated the festival: descending from the mountains with torches, they took a painting depicting the Virgin from the Church of the Immaculate and carried it in an unauthorized night procession, shouting, "Not only the powerful, but we too say long live Mary."

Still today, at 9 PM, a devotee knocks three times on the church door with a hammer: the door opens, and the procession begins. The torchbearers carry long, handcrafted torches, over a meter long, made of linen fibers and Greek pitch coated in plaster, which burn slowly. Protected by jackets, hoods, gloves, and goggles against the sparks of the incandescent pitch, they accompany the sacred image for hours through the village streets until late at night.

December 8th: The Immaculate Conception

The third day celebrates the Immaculate Conception, to whom the people of Saponara are particularly devoted. In the Church of the Immaculate, built in 1607, the exquisite wooden statue of the Madonna is kept, which on the day of the feast is carried in procession, often accompanied by fireworks that bring the three days of celebrations to a beautiful close.

A heritage of popular faith

The Feast of U Quadrittu is much more than a religious event: it is a rite of fire and social redemption that weaves together purification, regeneration, and the autonomous devotion of the people. Jealously guarded by the community of Saponara, it represents one of the most authentic expressions of Sicilian religious folklore and an unmissable appointment for those who want to discover the most genuine traditions of the Sicily Region.
