The nocturnal pilgrimage from Larderia to the peak of the Peloritani Mountains

The Feast of the Madonna di Dinnammare is the most cherished event in the village of Larderia, in the municipality of Messina, Sicily. Its name derives from the Latin bimaris, meaning "between two seas": from the summit of Mount Dinnammare, the highest point of the northern ridge of the Peloritani Mountains at 1,127 meters, the gaze sweeps across both the Ionian and Tyrrhenian Seas, with the city of Messina, the Strait, Capo Milazzo, and the Aeolian Islands on the horizon. According to tradition, in ancient times, a specola or watchtower stood on the peak, which the people of Messina converted into a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary, invoked as the city's protector.
The heart of the festival is a pilgrimage that has been renewed for over three centuries. In the middle of the night, the procession departs from Lower Larderia, from the Church of San Giovanni Battista, and winds through the creek bed to the San Biagio district in Upper Larderia. From there, the faithful take the forest paths that climb toward the mountain: a column of over 1,500 pilgrims of all ages who, in turns, carry the painting of the Madonna on their shoulders along the steep path leading to the summit. Arrival occurs at dawn, when the daylight illuminates the two seas and the sanctuary square fills with songs and emotion.
The painting carried in the procession depicts the Virgin and Child blessing, supported by two dolphins, a copy of a work attributed to the circle of the Messina painter Michele Panebianco. Once it reaches the sanctuary, the miraculous painting is placed on an ancient millstone that serves as an altar: from that moment until late evening, a Holy Mass is celebrated every hour. The day concludes with the return procession to Larderia, accompanied by the songs of the devotees and the local brass band.
The original building dated back to the Byzantine era. In 1899, it was demolished by the military to build the Dinnammare Fort, designed to defend the Strait, and the sanctuary was rebuilt nearby, where it still stands today in its simplicity: a stone structure of medieval inspiration that houses a marble relief of the Madonna and Child. A second, more intimate pilgrimage traditionally takes place on the first Sunday of September.
More than just a patronal feast, the Dinnammare pilgrimage is a rite of identity for Larderia and the entire southern side of Messina: it combines the physical exertion of the nocturnal climb with the spirituality of the dawn at the summit, in one of the most spectacular landscapes in the province. For the visitor, it is an opportunity to discover an authentic Sicily, made of popular traditions, community, and panoramas that embrace two seas.
The 2026 edition of the pilgrimage and feast of the Madonna di Dinnammare in Larderia, a district of Messina, is expected to follow the usual tradition in the first days of August, although the official dates and program have not yet been published.
The ritual has followed the same pattern for centuries: the nocturnal departure from the Church of San Giovanni Battista, the ascent on foot along the trails of the Peloritani Mountains with the painting of the Virgin carried on shoulders, the arrival at dawn at the sanctuary at 1,127 meters, and the Holy Masses celebrated throughout the day, until the return procession. It is recommended to check dates and times on the Larderia parish channels closer to the event.
Larderia is a southern district of Messina, reachable by car from the Messina Centro motorway exit or via the provincial road that climbs the valley. The summit of Dinnammare (1,127 m) is accessible on foot along the Peloritani trails or by off-road vehicle along the forest track.
The nocturnal pilgrimage requires hiking boots, layered clothing, water, and a flashlight: the climb lasts several hours and takes place on mountain trails. At the summit, nighttime temperatures are significantly cooler than in the valley. Participation in the celebrations is free.
For accommodation, visitors can rely on the facilities in the city of Messina, a short drive away.
