The patronal feast of Roccavaldina in honor of Saint Nicholas of Bari
In the small village of Roccavaldina, perched on the hills of the Province of Messina overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Saint Nicholas of Bari Festival is the most anticipated religious event of the year. Saint Nicholas, the Bishop of Myra venerated throughout Italy, is the town's patron saint, and his figure has guided the life of the local community for centuries. The celebration, held in the first days of December, weaves together solemn liturgy and the warmth of popular participation in a series of moments of faith and festivity.
The focal point of the entire festival is the Duomo di San Nicolò, the 16th-century mother church of the town. In its transept, it houses a chapel dedicated to the saint, adorned with stuccoes and frescoes depicting episodes from his life. This is where the precious wooden statue of the patron saint is kept, which becomes the absolute protagonist of the celebrations and the object of the faithful's devotion during the festival days.
The festivities open on December 4th with the evocative transfer of the statue, carried from the sacristy to the high altar in an atmosphere of quiet reflection. The following days feature Eucharistic celebrations and moments of prayer, leading up to the climax on December 6th, the liturgical feast day of Saint Nicholas.
The local devotion to Saint Nicholas is rooted in an ancient legend. It is said that during a time of terrible famine, the inhabitants of Roccavaldina invoked the saint's help by carrying his image in procession. Shortly after, miraculously, a ship loaded with sacks of rice arrived on the coast, saving the population from starvation. In gratitude, the Festa del Convito was born, an extraordinary tradition that repeats at irregular intervals (according to custom, no less than five and no more than fifty years). During this event, after the sacrifice of a young ox, the meat is cooked and distributed to the population along with rice, bread, and wine in a large public banquet in the square.
The Saint Nicholas of Bari Festival is much more than a religious anniversary: it is a moment of strong identity for Roccavaldina and the entire territory of the Province of Messina in Sicily. Amidst solemn liturgies, processions, music, and popular traditions, the village gathers around its patron saint in an atmosphere of faith and conviviality passed down from generation to generation.
The dates for the 2026 edition are confirmed: the festivities in honor of Saint Nicholas of Bari, patron saint of Roccavaldina, will be held from December 4th to 6th, 2026. As per tradition, the festival will open with the transfer of the wooden statue of the saint from the sacristy to the high altar of the Duomo di San Nicolò, culminating on December 6th with the solemn afternoon procession through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by a brass band and the devotion of the local community.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition, including times for Holy Masses and civil events, has not yet been announced and will be published by the organizers closer to the festival dates.
The festival is held in the historic center of Roccavaldina (Province of Messina, Sicily), with the Duomo di San Nicolò as its epicenter. Celebrations take place in early December, opening on December 4th and culminating on December 6th.
