Three days of faith, music, and entertainment on the last Sunday of May
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In Contrada, a small town in the province of Avellino, Campania, just a few kilometers from the regional capital, devotion to Saint Michael the Archangel is not just a three-day event: it is a core part of the town's identity. Local records note the presence of five votive shrines dedicated to the Archangel along the town's streets, including Via Napoli, Via Nazionale, and Via Puzzone. It is from this daily devotion that the patronal festival is born, celebrated traditionally on the last Sunday of May and experienced as the true community highlight of the year.
The most iconic moment is the arrival of the Torchlight Procession of Faith, the pilgrimage that reaches Contrada from the Grotto of Saint Michael the Archangel in Fasanella. In 2025, the 26th edition of the procession was celebrated: a number that speaks, better than any description, to the continuity of this pilgrimage. The faithful await the arrival of the procession in the late afternoon on Saturday; immediately after, Holy Mass and a community prayer session are held.
The festival does not end over the weekend. In the 2025 edition, the religious program began as early as May 16th, with the Holy Rosary at 6:30 PM and Holy Mass at 7:00 PM in the Church of Saint John, appointments repeated daily until the Saturday vigil. Sunday remains the main day, marked by Holy Masses and, in the evening, the procession through the town streets, which winds through the center illuminated by festive lights.
Alongside the liturgical calendar runs the so-called civil program, which in recent years has brought well-known names from the Campanian comedy and music scene to Contrada. The heart of the performances is Piazza del Carmine, which transforms into an open-air stage on Saturday evening. In 2025, the lineup featured:
Behind the organization is the Association of Maria SS. di Monserrato and Saint Michael the Archangel, founded in 2020, which works alongside the Parish of Saint John the Baptist and Saint Mary of Monserrato. The same association manages the other major event on Contrada's calendar, the Feast of Maria SS. di Monserrato, which falls on the Sunday after Easter: two events that together define the town's spring and mobilize volunteers, committees, and families for months.
The festival in Contrada should be viewed within a broader devotional geography. In Irpinia, the cult of Saint Michael is widespread: Solofra and Sturno, for example, dedicate their own celebrations to the Archangel, and according to local sources, on May 8th, Contrada, Avellino, and Forino share a very evocative ritual where two statues of the Saint ascend Mount Faliesi to unite in a single feast. For visitors, this is perhaps the most interesting aspect: not an isolated event, but a piece of a tradition that unites neighboring towns and spans centuries.
Those looking for a large, structured festival will not find it here. The Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel is a local patronal festival in the truest sense: decorated streets, market stalls, families returning from abroad for the occasion, the band playing under the windows on Sunday morning, and the square filling up in the evening without tickets or fences. It is the most direct way to understand how a religious celebration is still experienced today in the towns of the province of Avellino.
As of the update of this entry, the dates and program for the 2026 edition have not yet been published. The event is traditionally set for the last Sunday of May, but before traveling, it is advisable to check the final calendar through the parish and the organizing association's channels.
The Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel is a fixed event on the calendar of Contrada, in the province of Avellino, but for 2026, the official dates have not yet been released.
If tradition is upheld, the event will take place on the last Sunday of May, with the usual structure: the cycle of Holy Masses and Rosaries in the Church of Saint John in the preceding days, the arrival of the Torchlight Procession of Faith from the Grotto of Saint Michael the Archangel in Fasanella, and Sunday dedicated to solemn celebrations and the procession through the town streets.
On the civil side, in previous years the committee has organized comedy evenings and concerts in Piazza del Carmine, closing with a band, fireworks, and a charity tombola. For 2026, no names or times are currently confirmed: we will update this entry as soon as the program is made public.
Contrada is located in the province of Avellino, a few kilometers from the capital, and is easily accessible by car. The reference railway station is Avellino; the nearest airport is Naples-Capodichino, connected to Avellino by bus lines.
Religious events are held in the Church of Saint John, while evening concerts and shows take place outdoors in Piazza del Carmine. The Sunday procession travels through the town center.
Performances in the square during patronal festivals are traditionally free and open to the public.
