May 1st in Palo del Colle: a blend of faith, equestrian tradition, and celebration
In the heart of the Apulian spring, the town of Palo del Colle (Metropolitan City of Bari) pays tribute to Saint Joseph the Worker. Celebrated on May 1st, this festival weaves together religious devotion and one of the town's most cherished civic traditions. For four days, from the preparatory triduum to the solemnity itself, the streets and squares of the historic center come alive with celebrations, music, local flavors, and ancient customs that draw visitors from across the Bari hinterland.
The festivities begin with a preparatory triduum at the Saint Joseph Parish. In the days leading up to the feast, the Holy Rosary is recited at 6:30 PM, followed by the celebration of the Eucharist at 7:00 PM. The community gathers around the figure of the patron saint of workers in a spirit of reflection that precedes the vibrant civic celebration.
The most iconic and identity-defining moment is the Saint Joseph Cavalcade, a horseback procession that revives an ancient local tradition, parading from Piazzale Venezuela to Piazza Diaz. Organized by the 'Cavalieri del Palio' in collaboration with the Pro Loco, the cavalcade is enhanced by groups of flag-wavers, musicians, and drummers who accompany the riders along the route, turning the town streets into a stage of color and folk rhythms.
The eve of the feast is dedicated to 'Lago San Giuseppe in Festa', featuring entertainment for children, magic shows, street performers, and a gastronomic evening accompanied by live music. On May 1st, the day of the solemnity, morning masses are followed by a procession through the town streets with the venerated wooden statue of Saint Joseph, accompanied by the notes of brass bands. In the evening, concerts in Piazza Diaz and a fireworks display bring the four-day festival to a spectacular close.
Organized by the Saint Joseph Parish and the Confraternity of Saint Joseph, with the support of local associations, the Feast of Saint Joseph the Worker is an event that unites the entire community of Palo del Colle. It is the perfect opportunity to discover an authentic Apulian village, its historic center, its cuisine, and its hospitality, far from the more crowded tourist circuits.
