The Mola seafaring festival between faith and the sea
The Feast of Maria SS. d'Altomare is the most cherished event for the community of Mola di Bari, a coastal town in the metropolitan city of Bari, Puglia. Every year, in early July, the local seafaring community gathers around its celestial protector, invoked for centuries to safeguard the arduous and risky work at sea. It is a festival that originates from the harbor and returns to it, weaving popular faith with the maritime identity of an Adriatic village forever linked to fishing.
The most evocative moment is the maritime procession. On Sunday morning, the sacred effigy is led in a parade from the church to the harbor and embarked on a fishing boat chosen by lottery from the local fleet. From there, it sets sail, followed by hundreds of decorated and festive boats that form a wide circle around the Madonna in a water carousel of great emotional impact. Upon returning to the dock, the blessing of the sea takes place, a gesture through which the community entrusts its fishermen and boats to the protector.
The devotion of Mola towards the Madonna d'Altomare is ancient, but the current form of the festival owes much to the initiative of Father Giuseppe Buonsante, rector of the church and teacher at the local Nautical Institute, who, starting in 1948, wanted to add the sea route to the traditional procession through the town streets, which is now the heart of the event. Since then, the festival has grown while keeping its popular and identity-driven character intact.
Alongside the religious rites, the festival offers a rich secular program. Piazza XX Settembre and the streets of the center light up with artistic illuminations, while the best Puglian brass bands perform their concerts in the bandstand. There is no shortage of pop music shows in the evenings, the evening procession through the city streets, and, as a grand finale, the highly anticipated fireworks launched from the harbor, illuminating the sky over the Adriatic.
During the festival days, Mola di Bari welcomes visitors from neighboring towns and tourists drawn by the unique atmosphere of its waterfront. It is the ideal opportunity to discover the Municipality of Mola di Bari, its Angevin-Aragonese castle overlooking the harbor, the alleys of the historic center, and the famous seafood gastronomy, starting with octopus, the symbol of Mola cuisine. A festival that tells, better than any other, the profound relationship between this Puglian community and its sea.
For 2026, the Feast of Maria SS. d'Altomare in Mola di Bari confirms its traditional calendar in early July, with the main event officially announced for Saturday, July 4, and the highlight day on Sunday, July 5. The waterfront is closed to traffic to host the rites and thousands of participants.
Again this year, the focal point is the sea procession: the sacred effigy is led to the harbor and embarked on a fishing boat, followed by the decorated vessels of the local fleet in a striking water carousel, before the blessing of the sea. On land, the evening procession through the city center, brass band concerts, artistic illuminations in Piazza XX Settembre, and the final fireworks display at the harbor are renewed.
Saturday, July 4, 2026 — Solemn Eucharistic celebration; procession of the sacred effigy towards the harbor and embarkation on the designated boat; evening musical shows and artistic illuminations in Piazza XX Settembre.
Sunday, July 5, 2026 — Holy Mass; maritime procession and water carousel with the boats of the Mola seafaring community; return to the harbor and procession through the city streets; blessing of the sea; brass band concerts; fireworks to conclude the festival.
Note: the program structure follows the established tradition of the festival; precise times are released by the committee and the parish in the days preceding the event.
Mola di Bari is located on the Adriatic coast, about 20 km south of Bari. By train, it is served by the Adriatic line (Ferrovie dello Stato), with the station just a few minutes from the center. By car, it can be reached via the SS16 Adriatica, Mola di Bari exit.
The heart of the festival is the harbor and the city waterfront, with religious celebrations in the church housing the icon and secular events concentrated in Piazza XX Settembre and the streets of the center. During the event, the waterfront is closed to traffic.
All events take place outdoors and are free of charge.
To watch the sea procession, it is advisable to arrive early to find a spot along the pier or the waterfront. We recommend visiting the castle and stopping at the seafood trattorias in the harbor.
