The patronal feast of Aradeo, blending faith, folklore, and an ancient livestock fair
The Feast and Fair of Saint Nicholas the Bishop is the most anticipated event of the year for the community of Aradeo, a small village of Byzantine origins located in the heart of Salento, in the province of Lecce. Saint Nicholas, Bishop of Myra, is the town's patron saint, and every year, on the second Sunday of May, the municipality of Aradeo gathers around his figure in a celebration that combines religious devotion, popular tradition, and folklore.
The bond between Aradeo and Saint Nicholas has deep roots: as early as the 16th century, devotees built a small chapel outside the walls, known as «la cappella te San Niculieddhru», with a barrel vault and a fresco of the Saint. Since then, the veneration has never ceased, passed down from generation to generation to become one of the strongest identity elements of the Aradeo community.
The most evocative and awaited moment is undoubtedly the evening procession. After the solemn mass, the statue of the Saint is carried on the shoulders of the faithful on a papier-mâché boat: a scenic ritual full of meaning, which symbolically evokes the journey made by the relics of Saint Nicholas during their transfer from Myra to Bari. The procession crosses the streets of the historic center, illuminated by traditional Salento lights, and concludes with a spectacular fireworks display that paints the night sky.
During the festival days, the town comes alive with a rich program: brass band concerts in the characteristic bandstand, the colorful show of flag-wavers, live music performances, and entertainment for all ages. The atmosphere is typical of Apulian patronal feasts, where the sacred and the profane coexist in one great popular celebration.
Alongside the religious festivities, the renowned mercantile and livestock fair is held in contrada Bambo, active continuously since 1901. It is one of the most characteristic markets in Salento: among the stalls of agricultural products and goods, carts, carriages, horses, and ponies parade, featuring a draft horse exhibition organized in collaboration with the local riding club. The fair represents a precious testimony to the rural and peasant culture of Apulia, once a fundamental moment for local trade.
Participating in the Saint Nicholas Feast means immersing yourself in the most authentic soul of Aradeo and Salento: a blend of faith, popular traditions, and conviviality that every May attracts residents, returning emigrants, and visitors from all over the province of Lecce.
For 2026, the Feast of Saint Nicholas the Bishop in Aradeo was celebrated on the weekend of the second Sunday of May, May 9 and 10. The program followed the usual structure of the patronal feast: liturgical celebrations in the Mother Church, band concerts, flag-waver performances, and live musical shows along the streets of the historic center illuminated by festive lights.
The heart of the festival was the evening procession with the statue of the Saint transported on the characteristic papier-mâché boat, followed by the fireworks display. In the Bambo district, the historic mercantile and livestock fair was held, featuring agricultural product stalls and the draft horse exhibition.
Aradeo can be reached by car via the SS 476, just a few kilometers from Galatina and Gallipoli. The nearest train station is served by the Ferrovie del Sud Est (Lecce-Gallipoli line); the reference airport is Brindisi-Casale.
The patronal feast and religious celebrations are free and take place in the historic center. Access to the Fair in the Bambo district is free.
It is recommended to check updated dates and times on the festival's Facebook page or at the Aradeo Town Hall. During the festival days, the town center may be subject to traffic changes.
