The fire of tradition lights up the heart of Palo del Colle on January 17th
The Fanove of Saint Anthony the Abbot are the signature festival of Palo del Colle, a town in the Metropolitan City of Bari, in Apulia. Every January 17th, the day dedicated to Saint Anthony the Abbot, the town transforms: over twenty large bonfires, called fanòv in the local dialect, are lit in squares, open spaces, and alleys, illuminating the winter evening with light, warmth, and the scent of wood. It is not merely a religious recurrence, but a collective ritual in which the local community finds its identity, blending faith, popular memory, and a sense of belonging to the territory.
Saint Anthony the Abbot, a monk who lived in Egypt between the 3rd and 4th centuries and is considered the father of monasticism, is venerated as the protector of animals and invoked against fire and disease. In popular tradition, his feast also marks the symbolic beginning of the Carnival period. In Palo del Colle, the bond with animals remains very strong: at 7:30 PM, on the churchyard of the Mother Church in Piazza della Minerva, the blessing of the animals is celebrated—one of the most attended moments, which every year draws numerous citizens with their pets, followed by the lighting of the fanove.
The lighting begins around 7:00 PM and involves the entire center. The bonfires are managed by associations, parish groups, volunteer organizations, and local citizens: the Pro Loco animates Piazza San Giovanni, the Unitalsi Group Piazza Verdi, the Confraternity of San Rocco Piazza Dante, while fires are lit along many other streets of the town thanks to the commitment of the residents. Around the flames, the squares become meeting places, featuring tastings of traditional dishes: kniadd, a hearty and humble legume soup, and pettole, sugar-coated fritters, which serve as a reminder of the local agricultural culture.
Alongside the devotional dimension, the evening offers festive moments. In the Rigenera area, on Via Pertini, the lighting is accompanied by live music and DJ sets, with the collaboration of local entities such as Radio REC, Interforze ODV, and ARCI Capafresca. A local dialect saying goes "A Sand Anduen mascker e suen", recalling how the saint's feast opens the season of masks and music. The Fanove thus remain an event where the most authentic side of Apulia tells its story through fire, bread, sharing, and hospitality.
The 2026 Fanove were held on Saturday, January 17th, in Palo del Colle.
