About Fallen Soldiers Commemoration

Every summer, Forte Pozzacchio—the final Austro-Hungarian fortress carved into the rock above Trambileno in the Vallagarina valley—hosts the traditional Fallen Soldiers Commemoration. This day of remembrance, promoted by the "Il Forte" Cultural and Recreational Association, features Holy Mass at the altar-ossuary, free guided tours of the fortification, a concert, and field kitchen service offering traditional Trentino dishes and wines. It is an event that blends reflection, history, and the promotion of a landmark site from the First World War.

A day of remembrance at Forte Pozzacchio

The Fallen Soldiers Commemoration at Forte Pozzacchio is the annual summer event where the Municipality of Trambileno, in the Vallagarina valley, and the "Il Forte" Cultural and Recreational Association pay tribute to those who lost their lives in conflict. The ceremony takes place within the walls of Forte Pozzacchio – Werk Valmorbia, the last Austro-Hungarian fortress built along the Trentino border, set in a location of profound symbolic and scenic value in the heart of Trentino-Alto Adige.

The fort carved into the mountain

Forte Pozzacchio represents the last of the Austro-Hungarian fortresses built between the late 19th and early 20th centuries on the border between Trentino and the Kingdom of Italy. Construction began in 1911 and was interrupted by the outbreak of war: the structure, entirely carved into the rock, remained unfinished and was abandoned on June 3, 1915, later suffering damage from bombardment. Following a meticulous restoration promoted by the Autonomous Province of Trento and the Municipality of Trambileno, the fort reopened to the public in 2014 and is now one of the most evocative Great War sites in the province of Trento.

The day's program

For years, the commemoration has followed a well-established schedule that balances moments of reflection with opportunities to explore the area:

  • Gathering in the fort's courtyard in the morning;
  • Holy Mass celebrated at the altar-ossuary, the spiritual heart of the ceremony;
  • Free guided tours inside the fortification, led by association volunteers who recount the history of this unfinished war machine;
  • Concert in the afternoon, featuring local choirs and brass bands;
  • Field kitchen open throughout the day, serving traditional dishes and local Trentino wines.

History, gathering, and local promotion

The Fallen Soldiers Commemoration is not merely a moment of remembrance, but also—as the association emphasizes—an opportunity to gather, learn about history, and promote the Vallagarina region. After a short walk along the ancient military road that leads from the parking lot to the entrance, passing through two First World War tunnels, visitors reach the fort nestled in the woods, offering sweeping views of the valley. It is a route suitable for everyone, making the day accessible to families as well.

The event is promoted by the "Il Forte" Cultural and Recreational Association with the patronage of the Municipality of Trambileno, and it remains one of the most heartfelt summer events in the province of Trento.
