Experience the first weekend of spring with exclusive FAI openings in the heart of Carini
The FAI Spring Days represent a major national event where the FAI - National Trust for Italy opens hundreds of art, history, and nature sites to the public during the first weekend of spring, many of which are rarely seen or usually closed. Carini, a significant town in the Metropolitan City of Palermo, Sicily, participates in this initiative through the dedicated work of the FAI Carini Group, which organizes extraordinary openings of local churches and monuments each year.
The Carini itinerary focuses on two sites of great historical and devotional significance. The Church and Cloister of Santa Caterina, located on Via San Giovanni Bosco and documented since the 16th century, preserves exquisite 18th-century decorative features: a single-nave church with side chapels and Baroque ornaments, alongside the intimate Cloister of the Collegio di Maria, a charming space housing a marble sculpture dedicated to the Saint. The second site is the Church of Maria Santissima del Roccazzello, an ancient rural sanctuary that remained in disrepair for decades before being restored and returned to the communityโa place deeply connected to popular devotion and the rural landscape of Carini.
At the heart of the FAI Spring Days are the Apprendisti Ciceroni (Apprentice Guides), students from Carini schools trained by FAI to share the history and beauty of their local monuments with visitors. These openings are managed in collaboration with city schools and local parishes, fostering a dialogue between education, community, and heritage that gives the event a strong sense of identity and educational value.
The FAI Spring Days in Carini are part of a broader itinerary that involves Palermo and numerous towns in its province, as well as the rest of Italy. The voluntary contribution model invites citizens and tourists to support the protection of Italy's cultural heritage and rediscover treasures that are often nearby but overlooked. For Carini, it is also an opportunity to highlight its historical-religious heritage and strengthen the bond between the community and its collective memory.
The 34th edition of the FAI Spring Days was held on March 21 and 22, 2026, throughout Italy. In Carini, in the province of Palermo, the FAI Group offered extraordinary access to two sites: the Church and Cloister of Santa Caterina (Via San Giovanni Bosco 41-43), featuring a route from the 18th-century church to the Collegio di Maria cloister and its marble sculpture, and the Church of Roccazzello, an ancient restored rural sanctuary.
Visits took place on both Saturday and Sunday, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM and in the afternoon, without the need for reservations. They were led by Apprendisti Ciceroni from the Laura Lanza Middle School and the Ugo Mursia Scientific High School in Carini, students trained by FAI to share their local heritage.
