The international photography festival of Reggio Emilia
European Photography is the major international photography festival that animates Reggio Emilia, in the heart of Emilia-Romagna, every spring. Promoted and organized by the Fondazione Palazzo Magnani and the Municipality of Reggio Emilia, with the support of the Emilia-Romagna Region, the festival transforms the entire city into a widespread exhibition route for over a month, weaving through historic palaces, cloisters, museums, and contemporary spaces.
What makes European Photography an eagerly awaited event by enthusiasts, photographers, and curators from all over the world is its thematic approach: each edition revolves around a concept that the artistic direction entrusts to a group of international curators. The official circuit exhibitions are built around this theme, while hundreds of spontaneous projects populate the OFF circuit, set up in private apartments, gardens, artist studios, galleries, and shops in the historic center.
The heart of the festival is the Chiostri di San Pietro, but the exhibitions extend to many of the city's most evocative venues: Palazzo da Mosto, Palazzo dei Musei, Palazzo Scaruffi, the Church of Santi Carlo e Agata, Spazio Gerra, and the Collezione Maramotti. Visiting European Photography also means discovering the architecture and historical heritage of Reggio Emilia, walking from one venue to another.
Alongside the exhibitions, European Photography offers a packed program of artist talks, conferences, book presentations, portfolio reviews, workshops, performances, and the [Parentesi] Bookfair dedicated to independent publishers. The opening days, concentrated in the first long weekend, are the most intense period, with a packed schedule of events that attracts a national and international audience.
Founded in 2006, the festival has grown to become one of the continent's leading photography events, capable of uniting major names in the history of photography with emerging research, including sections dedicated to young artists and awards such as the Luigi Ghirri Award, named after the Reggio Emilia photographer who shaped Italian visual culture. For the city of Reggio Emilia and the entire Province, European Photography is now an identity mark and a premier tourist and cultural event.
The XXI edition of European Photography, scheduled in Reggio Emilia from April 30 to June 14, 2026, revolves around the theme "Ghosts of the everyday", an invitation to explore what remains beyond appearances, continues to generate new visions. The artistic direction is entrusted to curators Luce Lebart, Tim Clark, and Walter Guadagnini. The edition features 20 exhibitions in the official circuit and over 300 in the OFF circuit, with intense opening days from April 30 to May 3.
The first long weekend concentrates the most vibrant part of the festival: conferences, artist talks, book presentations and signings, portfolio reviews, workshops, the [Parentesi] Bookfair dedicated to independent publishers, and performances. Among the announced guests are Loredana Lipperini, Simona Vinci, Annamaria Testa, psychoanalyst Luigi Zoja, and trumpeter Nello Salza.
Over 300 independent exhibitions spread across private apartments, gardens, artist studios, galleries, and shops in the city center, with the OFF@school initiative involving local schools.
Reggio Emilia is served by the Milan-Bologna railway line: the Reggio Emilia AV Mediopadana (high-speed) station is a few minutes from the center, while the historic station is right in the city center. By car, take the Reggio Emilia exit from the A1 motorway. All festival venues are within walking distance in the historic center.
The single ticket for the official circuit costs €20 (full price) and €18 (reduced for over 65s); it allows access to all official circuit exhibitions for the entire duration of the festival. The ticket office is located at the Chiostri di San Pietro, in via Emilia San Pietro 44/c. Guided tours cost €5 in addition to the ticket (package of 4 tours for €15). The OFF circuit is largely free.
