About European Photography

Every spring, Reggio Emilia transforms into the Italian capital of photography. European Photography brings dozens of exhibitions to the city in historic palaces and cloisters in the city center, featuring Italian and international artists, a rich, widespread OFF circuit, and opening days filled with talks, portfolio reviews, performances, and a book fair dedicated to independent publishing. An event promoted by the Fondazione Palazzo Magnani and the Municipality of Reggio Emilia, it is now among the most important photography festivals in Europe.

The photography festival of Reggio Emilia

European Photography is the major international photography festival that animates Reggio Emilia, in the heart of Emilia-Romagna, every spring. Promoted and organized by the Fondazione Palazzo Magnani and the Municipality of Reggio Emilia, with the support of the Emilia-Romagna Region, the festival transforms the entire city into a widespread exhibition route for over a month, weaving through historic palaces, cloisters, museums, and contemporary spaces.

A different theme each year

What makes European Photography an eagerly awaited event by enthusiasts, photographers, and curators from all over the world is its thematic approach: each edition revolves around a concept that the artistic direction entrusts to a group of international curators. The official circuit exhibitions are built around this theme, while hundreds of spontaneous projects populate the OFF circuit, set up in private apartments, gardens, artist studios, galleries, and shops in the historic center.

Venues in the historic center

The heart of the festival is the Chiostri di San Pietro, but the exhibitions extend to many of the city's most evocative venues: Palazzo da Mosto, Palazzo dei Musei, Palazzo Scaruffi, the Church of Santi Carlo e Agata, Spazio Gerra, and the Collezione Maramotti. Visiting European Photography also means discovering the architecture and historical heritage of Reggio Emilia, walking from one venue to another.

More than just an exhibition festival

Alongside the exhibitions, European Photography offers a packed program of artist talks, conferences, book presentations, portfolio reviews, workshops, performances, and the [Parentesi] Bookfair dedicated to independent publishers. The opening days, concentrated in the first long weekend, are the most intense period, with a packed schedule of events that attracts a national and international audience.

A European reference point

Founded in 2006, the festival has grown to become one of the continent's leading photography events, capable of uniting major names in the history of photography with emerging research, including sections dedicated to young artists and awards such as the Luigi Ghirri Award, named after the Reggio Emilia photographer who shaped Italian visual culture. For the city of Reggio Emilia and the entire Province, European Photography is now an identity mark and a premier tourist and cultural event.

European Photography — edition 2026

The XXI edition of European Photography, from April 30 to June 14, 2026, has the theme "Ghosts of the everyday": what remains beyond appearances, persists in memory, and generates new visions. Twenty exhibitions in the official circuit and over three hundred in the OFF circuit, with opening days from April 30 to May 3.
