Summer open-air cinema in the heart of Reggio Emilia
Every summer, from June to September, the Arena Stalloni transforms one of the most characteristic spaces in the historic centre of Reggio Emilia into a large open-air cinema arena. The Cinema sotto le stelle (Cinema under the stars) festival, curated by Arci Reggio Emilia in collaboration with the Municipal Cinema Office, offers about ninety screening evenings, seven nights a week, for almost three consecutive months: one of the most intense and continuous offerings in all of Emilia-Romagna.
The programme ranges from previews and the most anticipated titles of the season to the great classics of cinema history, presented in restored versions and in their original language with subtitles. Alongside the best of Italian and international cinema, there are documentaries, art films, and films with a social theme, in a balance that has made the Arena a reference point for the most curious and demanding audiences.
One of the distinctive features of Arena Stalloni is the meetings with directors, actors, and cinema personalities: special evenings where the film is presented directly by those who made it. The 2026 edition includes events with authors and guests who accompany the screenings, enriching the experience with presentations and debates open to the public.
One of the most appreciated aspects of the festival is its popular pricing policy. Thanks to national initiatives such as Cinema in Festa and Cinema Revolution, many evenings are offered at reduced prices, making the big screen accessible to families, young people, and cinephiles. Several opening and special evenings also offer free admission.
The Arena Stalloni is named after the former horse depot, repurposed as a cultural space, and is located on Via Samarotto, a short walk from the centre. With over thirteen thousand attendees in the previous edition, it has confirmed itself as one of the pulsating hearts of Reggio Emilia's summer cultural offerings, in a region, Emilia-Romagna, where open-air cinema is a deep-rooted and widely followed tradition.
The 2026 season of Arena Stalloni kicks off on June 9 and continues until September 6, with screenings every evening at 9:30 PM during the summer months. Among the first titles on the bill are art films and previews, accompanied by special evenings and meetings with directors and personalities from Italian and international cinema.
The festival confirms the formula that has made it popular: the best films of the season, restored classics in their original language with subtitles, and films with a social theme, with numerous evenings at reduced prices thanks to the Cinema in Festa (June 15-18) and Cinema Revolution initiatives.
