Celebrating music on June 21st in the 'White City' of the Itria Valley
The European Music Festival is the event through which Martina Franca, an elegant Baroque town in the Itria Valley in the province of Taranto, joins the great continental music celebration every year. Born in France in 1982 as the Fête de la Musique and celebrated throughout Europe on June 21st to mark the summer solstice, the event brings live music to the streets and squares—free and outdoors—based on a simple principle: music as a universal language, open to everyone without barriers.
Notes resonate in the most evocative spots of Martina Franca's historic center, among churches, 18th-century palaces, and squares framed by the whiteness of lime-washed houses. From Piazza XX Settembre to the city's green spaces, the schedule hosts diverse genres and ensembles: classical and opera music, brass bands, pop, rock, singer-songwriter tracks, and folk sounds. It is not just a simple lineup of shows, but a "continuous and free contamination of sounds" involving professional musicians, emerging bands, and young students from local music schools.
The festival, promoted by the Municipality of Martina Franca through the Department of Cultural Activities and Entertainment and included in the national and international European Music Festival circuit, makes accessibility its hallmark. Admission is always free, and the concerts are designed for a broad and diverse audience: families, young people, enthusiasts, and casual passersby who encounter music along the city streets. The values highlighted by the event are those of participation, integration, and the universality of musical language.
Martina Franca has always been a musical capital of Apulia: since 1975, it has hosted the famous Festival della Valle d'Itria, one of the most important Italian opera festivals. In this context of strong tradition, the European Music Festival represents the popular and widespread face of local musical passion, taking music out of theaters and returning it to the city and its inhabitants for an evening of sharing. It is an opportunity to experience the historic center of Martina, its alleys, and its squares in a festive atmosphere that symbolically marks the beginning of summer in the Itria Valley.
For the 2026 edition, on the occasion of the 32nd European Music Festival, Martina Franca hosted a concert on Sunday, June 21st at 8:00 PM in Piazza XX Settembre by the Fanfare of the Italian Air Force Schools Command / 3rd Air Region of Bari, one of the most representative brass ensembles on the Italian scene. The initiative was promoted by the Department of Cultural Activities and Entertainment of the Municipality of Martina Franca in collaboration with the Italian Air Force, which has a presence in the Martina area.
Conducted by 1st Lieutenant Maestro Nicola Cotugno, the Fanfare proposed a broad and engaging repertoire, featuring famous pages from melodrama such as Giuseppe Verdi's Nabucco and Giacomo Puccini's Turandot, soundtracks by Ennio Morricone, tangos by Astor Piazzolla, pieces by George Gershwin and Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story, as well as tributes to Domenico Modugno and Benny Goodman. A free evening open to everyone, without reservation, which combined musical quality and popular participation on the longest day of the year.
Martina Franca is located in the Itria Valley, in the province of Taranto. By car, it can be reached via the SS172 dei Trulli road. The train station is served by Ferrovie del Sud Est, with connections to Taranto, Bari, and the coast. The nearest airports are Bari-Palese and Brindisi-Casale, both about an hour's drive away.
Concerts mainly take place in the evening, starting around 8:00 PM, in Piazza XX Settembre and throughout the historic center. Admission is free and no booking is required.
We recommend arriving in the center early to find parking in the areas outside the old town and taking advantage of the evening to visit the Baroque center and savor the typical cuisine of the Itria Valley.
