About Eurobirdwatch Saline di Priolo

Every year in early October, the Saline di Priolo Nature Reserve in the province of Syracuse joins Eurobirdwatch, the major European birdwatching festival coordinated by BirdLife. For an entire weekend, accompanied by experts from LIPU Syracuse, enthusiasts and curious visitors observe the autumn bird migration—including flamingos, black-winged stilts, and waders—in one of the most surprising spots in south-eastern Sicily.

A European date with migration

Eurobirdwatch is the pan-European birdwatching initiative coordinated by BirdLife Europe. Every first weekend of October, it mobilizes dozens of countries across Europe and Central Asia to observe and document the autumn migration of birds. In Italy, the event is organized by LIPU, and one of the most fascinating stops is the Saline di Priolo Nature Reserve, located in the municipality of Priolo Gargallo, in the province of Syracuse, in the heart of south-eastern Sicily.

The Saline di Priolo Reserve

Established in December 2000 and managed by LIPU, the reserve now covers over 230 hectares, including wetlands, coastal marshes, and the picturesque Magnisi Peninsula. It is an authentic island of nature nestled within the industrial area between Syracuse and Augusta: a paradox that makes it even more precious. Over 240 bird species have been observed here, eighty percent of which are migratory. The Saline became famous for the first flamingo nesting in Sicily, which occurred in 2015, with colonies exceeding three hundred pairs in recent years.

What happens during Eurobirdwatch

During the Eurobirdwatch weekend, experts from LIPU Syracuse guide participants along the reserve's equipped trails and to the observation hides, sharing insights into the biology and behavior of the species spotted. Activities focus on observing the migration and discovering local birdlife:

  • Guided outings with binoculars and spotting scopes to observe flamingos, black-winged stilts, herons, egrets, and waders;
  • Nature excursions through the marshes, the Magnisi Peninsula, and the Pantani Gelsari;
  • Educational sessions on wetland conservation and the importance of migratory routes;
  • Activities suitable for families, children, and enthusiasts of all ages.

An experience of nature and awareness

Participating in Eurobirdwatch at the Saline di Priolo means combining the pleasure of nature observation with a broader environmental awareness. The reserve, located just a stone's throw from the petrochemical hub, is a symbol of how nature can resist and thrive even in the most compromised environments. For those visiting Sicily, it is a unique opportunity to discover a lesser-known side of the island, made of lagoons, pink flamingos, and silent flights at dawn. We recommend bringing binoculars, comfortable shoes, and a packed lunch.

Eurobirdwatch Saline di Priolo — edition 2026

Eurobirdwatch returns to the Saline di Priolo every year in early October, coinciding with the European birdwatching day coordinated by BirdLife. The dates for the 2026 edition at the Saline di Priolo have not yet been officially announced by LIPU Syracuse; the program and schedule will be published in the weeks leading up to the event. We recommend checking the official Reserve channels for updates.

The 2026 edition of Eurobirdwatch at the Saline di Priolo does not yet have official dates or a program at the time of publication. The event traditionally takes place on the first weekend of October, in line with the European birdwatching day promoted by BirdLife Europe and organized in Italy by LIPU. Information on times, meeting points, and activities will be updated as soon as LIPU Syracuse and the Saline di Priolo Nature Reserve announce the final calendar.
