The winter jazz festival featuring acclaimed artists in the theaters of the Empolese-Valdelsa area
Empoli Jazz Winter is the winter concert series organized by the Empoli Jazz Association, the same group that brings the city's historic center to life in the summer with the Empoli Jazz Festival. While the summer version takes place outdoors, between the Giardino del Torrione and Piazza Farinata degli Uberti, the winter edition moves indoors to the theaters of Empoli and neighboring towns in the heart of the Empolese-Valdelsa area, in the province of Florence.
The association's philosophy—founded on promoting high-quality live music, particularly jazz—remains the same even in winter: curated programs, a focus on contemporary styles, and an intimate atmosphere that brings the audience closer to the musicians. Empoli Jazz is a member of international networks such as the UNESCO International Jazz Day and the Europe Jazz Network, and was a founding member of the "Jazz Takes the Green" network dedicated to sustainable festivals.
The heart of Empoli Jazz Winter is the Teatro Il Momento in Empoli, a cozy space ideal for up-close listening. Over the years, the festival has also involved other local theaters, such as the Teatro del Popolo in Castelfiorentino and the Cinema Teatro La Perla, expanding its reach throughout the Valdelsa region.
The festival alternates between local ensembles reinterpreting the Great American Songbook and more structured projects that blend music, theater, and storytelling, alongside prestigious guests from the Italian jazz scene. Over time, Empoli Jazz Winter has brought artists such as Enrico Rava, Rita Marcotulli, Maria Pia De Vito, and Danilo Rea to Tuscany, building a solid reputation for quality despite its modest size.
For those visiting Tuscany off-season, Empoli Jazz Winter is an authentic way to experience the cultural life of a provincial city that has made jazz one of its defining identities.
The 2026 winter edition of Empoli Jazz Winter featured two high-profile events, held between the Teatro Il Momento in Empoli and the Teatro del Popolo in Castelfiorentino, in the Empolese-Valdelsa area.
The opening night highlighted the local scene with the Noemi Donzelli Group, while the second evening brought a theatrical-musical project dedicated to one of the iconic voices of jazz to the stage, with the participation of a nationally renowned pianist like Danilo Rea. The festival reaffirmed the Empoli Jazz Association's commitment to high-quality programming in intimate and welcoming spaces.
Concerts are primarily held at the Teatro Il Momento in Empoli (FI) and, on select dates, at other local theaters such as the Teatro del Popolo in Castelfiorentino.
Empoli is well-connected by train on the Florence-Pisa-Livorno line: the Empoli station is reachable in about 30 minutes from Florence Santa Maria Novella. By car, take the FI-PI-LI highway and exit at Empoli. The theaters are located in the city center.
Tickets can be purchased online through the association's ticketing platform and, when available, at the theater box office. Prices are affordable, with discounts for students and young people.
