About Emigrant's Festival

In the heart of the Acquaviva summer, the Emigrant's Festival opens its arms to those who left the small village in the province of Caltanissetta and return home for the season. An evening in Piazza Municipio filled with local delicacies, live music, and entertainment, designed to reconnect the threads of a community marked by a long history of migration to France and England. It is the moment when the town, now home to just over eight hundred souls, sees its square bustling and festive once again.

A celebration for those returning home

Every summer, in Acquaviva Platani, a small hillside village in the province of Caltanissetta, Sicily, the community gathers for the Emigrant's Festival. It is an evening dedicated to all those who, born or raised in this town of just over eight hundred inhabitants, left over the years and return during the summer months to embrace their roots. The festival takes place in Piazza Municipio, the heart of the historic center, and is part of the rich Acquaviva Summer calendar, which brings the village to life between late July and mid-August.

The roots of emigration

The Emigrant's Festival is more than just an evening of entertainment: it is deeply rooted in history. Between the 19th and 20th centuries, the closure of the "Spina" sulfur mine and the hardships of rural life drove many locals to seek their fortune elsewhere, particularly in France and the United Kingdom. That demographic wound, which more than halved the town's population, left an unbreakable bond with those who departed. It is no coincidence that Acquaviva Platani also preserves the memory of that past, with trunks, cardboard suitcases, photographs, letters, and passports that tell the stories of journeys and departures.

Tradition, faith, and the summer return

The festival is closely intertwined with summer religious celebrations, particularly the Madonna delle Grazie, venerated on the first Sunday of August and considered the protector of emigrants, and the feast of Maria SS. Annunziata on the third Sunday of the month. During these days, the village fills up, the squares come back to life, and the Acquaviva Summer offers concerts, shows, the famous White Night, and convivial moments.

Local products and conviviality

The Emigrant's Festival evening is all about taste and music: visitors can sample local products from the Nisseno area, the fruit of a land that thrives on wheat, olives, almonds, and pistachios. Between courses, there is dancing and live music in an atmosphere of popular celebration that unites generations. It is the perfect opportunity for those visiting inland Sicily to discover the authenticity of a village far from mass tourism routes, where part of the childhood of Nobel Prize-winning poet Salvatore Quasimodo was spent.

At the moment, the dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced by the organizers: as every year, the evening will be dedicated to returning emigrants, with local products, music, and entertainment in Piazza Municipio.
