The trail running and skyrunning race on Monte Capanne, between the granite and the sea of the Island of Elba
In the municipality of Marciana, in the Province of Livorno, on the wildest and most mountainous side of the Island of Elba, the Elba Trail has become a staple of the Tuscan trail running calendar. Organized by ASD Atletica Isola d'Elba within the Tuscan Archipelago National Park, the race attracts hundreds of runners from all over Italy every year, drawn by technical and spectacular routes that climb from the sea to the granite summit of Monte Capanne (1019 m), the island's highest peak.
What makes this event unique is the constant contrast between the environments it traverses: starting from the seafront of Marciana Marina, it crosses Mediterranean scrub, climbs through chestnut groves and granite boulders to the panoramic ridges of Monte Capanne, before diving back down toward the sea. A varied and technical terrain that has established the Elba Trail as one of the most beloved skyrunning events in Tuscany, and a stage of the Tuscany Sky Trail Tour circuit.
The event is divided into several distances designed to accommodate both ultra-distance specialists and amateur runners and walkers:
The Elba Trail, held in memory of Massimo Russo, is much more than a race: it is a celebration of sport and the community of Marciana and Marciana Marina, supported by local municipalities, the Tuscan Archipelago National Park, and numerous sponsors. The finish line on the Marciana Marina seafront, with the pasta party and awards ceremony, is the convivial gathering point for a weekend that combines sport, nature, and Elban hospitality, during a time of yearโspringโwhen the Island of Elba shows its most authentic face.
The sixteenth edition of the Elba Trail "Massimo Russo" was held on Saturday, April 11, 2026, between Marciana and Marciana Marina, confirming its status as one of the most anticipated events in Tuscan skyrunning and the first stage of the Tuscany Sky Trail Tour. About 650 athletes competed across the three competitive distances and the non-competitive walk, accompanied by an ideal spring day for running, which began with overcast skies and continued with sunshine.
The 58 km race, which started at dawn with headlamps, was won by local athlete Matteo Anselmi in 6h42'29", who was also the first to reach the summit of Monte Capanne. The 28 km race, valid as the Tuscan Sky Race Championship, crowned the regional champions of the discipline. All finishes on the Marciana Marina seafront concluded the day with a pasta party and awards ceremony.
The Island of Elba can be reached by ferry from Piombino (Province of Livorno) to Portoferraio, with frequent connections. From Portoferraio, continue by car toward Marciana and Marciana Marina on the western side of the island (about 30-40 minutes).
The starts for the longer races are in Marciana Marina, while the short courses and the walk start in Marciana; all finishes are on the Marciana Marina seafront. Bib collection takes place in Marciana (Piazza della Rimembranza) and in the start area in Marciana Marina.
Registration is done online via the Endu platform, with a link available on the official website elbatrail.it.
Marciana, Marciana Marina, and Pomonte offer numerous accommodations; early booking is recommended in spring.
