International classical and jazz music festival across the villages of the Island of Elba
Founded in 1997 by cellist Yuri Bashmet and Mario Brunello and now directed by George Edelman, Elba Isola Musicale d'Europa is one of the most prestigious chamber music festivals in the Mediterranean. Every year, between late August and September, the Island of Elba becomes a vast, diffuse stage that brings some of the most famous names on the international concert scene to its most picturesque villages. In 2026, the festival celebrates its 30th edition, scheduled from August 28 to September 13 in the territory of the Municipality of Portoferraio and seven other municipalities of the archipelago, in the Province of Livorno, Tuscany.
The 2026 edition brings together over 70 musicians from 24 nations in a series of concerts that weave together Baroque, classical, 20th-century, and jazz repertoires. Major highlights include the legendary pianist Martha Argerich, violinist Gidon Kremer, cellist Mario Brunello, jazz pianist Danilo Rea, and guitarist Peter Bernstein. The grand finale is entrusted to Martha Argerich's concert, scheduled for September 13 at the Teatro dei Vigilanti in Portoferraio. The Elba Festival Prize 2026, a recognition historically dedicated to emerging young talents, is awarded to David Chen Sverdlov.
The heart of the festival is the Teatro dei Vigilanti "Renato Cioni" in Portoferraio, alongside the De Laugier Cultural Center. However, concerts spread throughout the island, reaching Capoliveri, Marciana, Marciana Marina, Porto Azzurro, Marina di Campo, and Rio. Among the most fascinating venues are the Pisan Fortress of Marciana, ancient churches, and locations immersed in nature, with new sites such as the Piazza della Chiesa in Sant'Ilario and the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Monserrato in Porto Azzurro. It is this fusion of high-level music and the Elban landscape that makes the festival a unique experience.
Organized by the Associazione Opus 110, the festival has been a landmark for cultural tourism on the Island of Elba and in Tuscany for nearly thirty years, attracting an international audience at the end of the summer season. The festival combines evening concerts, open rehearsals, masterclasses, and opportunities to meet the artists, building a dialogue between great masters and new generations of performers.
The 2026 edition celebrates the festival's thirtieth anniversary with a prestigious international program. Among the stars are pianist Martha Argerich, violinist Gidon Kremer, cellist Mario Brunello, jazz pianist Danilo Rea, and guitarist Peter Bernstein. Concerts are held at the Teatro dei Vigilanti in Portoferraio and in historic and natural venues across the island, including Capoliveri, Marciana, Marciana Marina, Porto Azzurro, Marina di Campo, and Rio.
Nineteen concerts from August 28 to September 13, 2026, in all municipalities of the Island of Elba. The closing concert with Martha Argerich is scheduled for September 13 at 9:15 PM at the Teatro dei Vigilanti "Renato Cioni" in Portoferraio. Repertoire ranges from Baroque and classical music to contemporary jazz. New venues include the Piazza della Chiesa in Sant'Ilario (Campo nell'Elba) and the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Monserrato (Porto Azzurro). Full program at www.elba-music.it.
The Island of Elba can be reached by ferry from Piombino (about 1 hour) to Portoferraio, with companies such as Moby, Toremar, and Blu Navy. Piombino is connected by train (Piombino Marittima station) and by car via the SS398. There is also an airport in Marina di Campo for seasonal flights. On the island, it is best to get around by car or by renting a scooter.
Tickets range from approximately 10 to 60 euros depending on the concert; discounts for under-24s and season tickets are available. Online presale on Vivaticket. Early booking is recommended for popular concerts, such as Martha Argerich's.
Portoferraio and the other municipalities of Elba offer numerous accommodation facilities; in high season, booking ferries and accommodation in advance is strongly recommended.
