The international classical and jazz music festival of Elba Island
The Elba Isola Musicale d'Europa Festival is the most significant classical music event in the Tuscan Archipelago. Born in 1997 from the meeting between impresario George Edelman and the renowned violist Yuri Bashmet, it transforms Elba Island, in the province of Livorno, into a widespread stage every year between late August and mid-September, where classical, baroque, contemporary, and jazz music dialogue with the most evocative landscapes of the Mediterranean.
Concerts are not concentrated in a single venue but span the entire island: the heart of the festival is the Teatro dei Vigilanti "Renato Cioni" in Portoferraio, but evenings multiply between the Teatro Flamingo in Capoliveri, the Pisan Fortress of Marciana, the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Monserrato in Porto Azzurro, the churches of Rio, and the squares of Marciana Marina and Sant'Ilario. This "itinerant" formula is the hallmark of the event: listening to great music while simultaneously discovering the villages, coasts, and identity of the island.
Over the years, the festival has hosted some of the greatest performers on the world stage, from Martha Argerich to Gidon Kremer, from Mario Brunello to numerous soloists and chamber ensembles from dozens of different nations. The program alternates masterpieces of the chamber and symphonic repertoire with forays into auteur jazz and special projects, often featuring premieres and tributes to great composers.
For the audience in Capoliveri, a charming village in the south of Elba Island, the event is held at the Teatro Flamingo, one of the festival's most beloved venues, with evenings dedicated to jazz and live musical cinema that attract spectators from all over the island.
Organized by the Associazione Opus 110, the festival has established itself as one of the reference summer musical events in Tuscany, supported by public and private institutions and capable of combining artistic excellence with the tourism and landscape enhancement of the Tuscan Archipelago. Each edition confirms the international vocation of the festival, which brings dozens of musicians of numerous nationalities to the island and a passionate audience that combines their holiday on Elba with a high-level musical experience.
The 30th edition of the festival celebrates thirty years of the event and takes place from August 28 to September 13, 2026, involving seven municipalities on Elba Island: Portoferraio, Capoliveri, Marciana, Marciana Marina, Porto Azzurro, Marina di Campo, and Rio. Under the artistic direction of George Edelman, the edition brings together over 70 musicians from 24 nations in a journey ranging from baroque to contemporary repertoire and jazz, with tributes to the anniversaries of Louis Couperin, Carl Maria von Weber, and Benjamin Britten.
Among the great protagonists announced are pianist Martha Argerich, who closes the festival on September 13 at the Teatro dei Vigilanti in Portoferraio, violinist Gidon Kremer with the Kremerata Baltica, and cellist Mario Brunello. The Elba Festival Prize 2026 is awarded to the young pianist David Chen Sverdlov.
At the Teatro Flamingo in Capoliveri, an evening dedicated to silent cinema with live music is scheduled: the screening of the film "Go West" by Buster Keaton accompanied by the Ensemble improCinema (klezmer music and improvisation, with Gรผnter Buchwald, Mirko Cisilino, Romano Todesco, and Frank Bockius).
Concert times are generally at 6:30 PM, with evening performances at 9:15 PM and 9:45 PM on selected dates. The full program, with all dates and performers, is published on the official website www.elba-music.it.
