Optimist Class zonal team selection on Lake Ledro
The Due Giorni Ledro Team Race is one of the most anticipated events in the youth sailing calendar of Northern Italy. It takes place on the waters of Lake Ledro, in the municipality of Ledro, in the Province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige). The event is organized by the Associazione Vela Lago di Ledro (AVLL), a historic sailing club founded in 1963 based in the village of Pieve di Ledro.
Unlike individual regattas, the Due Giorni Ledro adopts the Team Race format: Optimist Class boats compete in teams through a rapid succession of races that reward collective tactics, cooperation among young athletes, and the ability to manage crosses and mark roundings. It is a zonal selection event serving as a qualifier for the Italian Optimist Team Race Championship, reserved for clubs in the XIV Zone of the Italian Sailing Federation (FIV), which brings together Trentino-Alto Adige and the entire Lake Garda region.
Nestled in the mountains just a short distance from Lake Garda, Lake Ledro offers consistent wind conditions and a compact body of water, perfect for the tight format of team racing. The alpine setting, clear water, and the facilities provided by the AVLL club—piers, slipways, changing rooms, and parking—make this location a benchmark for youth sailing, having previously hosted international competitions such as the Optimist Team Race European Championships.
The Due Giorni Ledro represents a fundamental training moment for young sailors under 15: here, they refine their tactical skills, learn to work as a team, and earn their spot in the national stages. Year after year, the podium is contested by the strongest clubs from Upper Garda and Trentino, such as Riva, Torbole, Bardolino, Salò, Malcesine, and Peschiera.
The 2026 Due Giorni Ledro Team Race took place on June 6 and 7, 2026, on the waters of Lake Ledro, organized by the Associazione Vela Lago di Ledro. Eleven teams from the main clubs in the area took part in the zonal selection, engaged in two days of intense racing.
The final standings saw the victory of RIVA 1, finishing first with 10 points, followed by SALÒ 1 and MALCESINE 1, tied at 8 points. The best crews thus secured their access to the national stages of the Italian Optimist Team Race Championship.
Lake Ledro can be reached by car from Riva del Garda (about 20 minutes) by taking the SS240 road towards the Ledro Valley. The Associazione Vela Lago di Ledro base is located at Via Alzer 9, in the village of Pieve di Ledro. By train, the nearest station is Rovereto, which is connected by bus to the Upper Garda area.
