The mountain relay race between Castello Mirabello and the Mombrisone Hunting Lodge
The Due Castelli has become a staple in the running calendar of Chiusa di Pesio, a town in the Province of Cuneo nestled at the entrance of the Pesio Valley, in Piedmont. The event is organized by the P.A.M. Mondovì-Chiusa di Pesio sports club in collaboration with the local council and is officially sanctioned by FIDAL Piemonte.
The race takes its name from its route, which links two of the most evocative sites in the region: Castello Mirabello and the Mombrisone Hunting Lodge. It is a race that combines physical challenge with scenic beauty, as spectators cheer on the athletes along the roads and trails surrounding the town.
The Due Castelli follows a unique format: it is a relay race for pairs. The competitive event is divided into two legs—the first approximately 9 km long and the second about 6.5 km—with a total elevation gain of around 200 meters, covering a mix of asphalt and natural terrain. The event is part of the regional mountain running circuit and serves as the FIDAL Provincial Mountain Relay Championship for Absolute and Master categories.
Relay teams can be mixed in category, but to compete for the provincial title, they must consist of athletes from the same sports club. The meeting point and start are in the town center, between Piazza Cavour and Piazza Tre Medaglie d'Oro.
For those not competing, the Due Castelli offers the Avisina Walk, a non-competitive 6 km loop towards Castello Mirabello, open to everyone. It is the perfect opportunity to explore the surroundings of Chiusa di Pesio at your own pace, with family or friends, and to soak up the event's atmosphere without needing a race bib.
The Due Castelli is much more than just a race: it is a local festival dedicated to sport and nature, highlighting the environment of the Pesio Valley and the historical heritage represented by its castles. A genuine event with an authentic Piedmontese spirit, it attracts runners and walkers from across the Cuneo province every year.
Chiusa di Pesio can be reached by car via the A6 Turin-Savona motorway (Mondovì exit) or via the state road from Cuneo. The meeting point and start are in the town center, between Piazza Cavour and Piazza Tre Medaglie d'Oro.
Registration for the competitive relay must be completed via the FIDAL SIGMA portal by the deadlines set by the organizers; on-site registration is available for an additional fee until shortly before the start. Participants for the Avisina walk can register directly on-site.
Refreshment stations and medical assistance with an ambulance will be available during the event.
