The fig that symbolizes Terlizzi, celebrated through tastings, culture, and tradition
In the heart of Puglia, in Terlizzi (Metropolitan City of Bari), the Domenico Tauro Fiorone Festival is much more than a gastronomic feast: it is the collective story of an entire territory told through its signature fruit. Every year, at the beginning of July, the historic center comes alive to pay homage to the Domenico Tauro fiorone, a native fig variety that has made the Terlizzi countryside famous far beyond regional borders.
The Domenico Tauro is a "bifera" (twice-bearing) fig typical of Terlizzi, capable of producing large fruits, often weighing over 90 grams, between June and July, followed by smaller, sweeter figs in September. It has an elongated, almost pear-like shape, firm skin that makes it easy to transport, and a purplish-red color when ripe, with a red, compact, and aromatic pulp that balances sweetness and slight acidity. According to local tradition, in the 18th century, a landowner and mayor named Domenico Tauro grafted a Spanish variety onto a prized local fig, giving rise to this cultivar: hence the dialect name Menghtร ur or Mingo Tauro, passed down from generation to generation.
Over the years, the event has become a true community project, promoted by the Municipality of Terlizzi together with the GAL Nuovo Fior d'Olivi, the Pro Loco, agricultural cooperatives, trade associations, and local commercial operators. One of the main goals today is the recognition of the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI): researchers from the University of Bari are documenting the scientific and historical origins of the fruit to support this candidacy and officially seal the centuries-old bond between the fiorone and its territory.
The festival weaves together different languages: technical-agronomic conferences dedicated to fiorone cultivation, art installations that combine ceramics with young fig plants, the presentation of the Fiorone Tales Notebook, activities for families and children, showcooking with tastings, and live music concerts. The most anticipated moment is the grand tasting dinner in Piazza Cavour, at the foot of the Clock Tower, with a menu entirely designed around the fiorone and traditional Apulian pairings, featuring local restaurateurs and pastry chefs.
Strolling through the stands and tasting dishes based on the fiorone means discovering an authentic Puglia, that of the villages that cherish their flavors and turn them into an occasion for gathering and collective pride.
The 2026 Domenico Tauro Fiorone Festival enlivened the historic center of Terlizzi from July 3rd to 5th, between the Chiostro delle Clarisse and Piazza Cavour, at the foot of the Clock Tower. The program combined agronomic enhancement, culture, and gastronomy, with the challenge for the PGI recognition of the Domenico Tauro fiorone at its center, supported by research from the University of Bari. Among the novelties of the year, the presentation of the Fiorone Tales Notebook and an art installation that combined ceramics with young fig plants.
Terlizzi is located in the Metropolitan City of Bari, easily accessible by car via the SS96 and SP231 roads. The Terlizzi railway station is served by the Bari-Barletta Ferrotramviaria line. The reference airports are Bari-Palese (Karol Wojtyลa), about 30 km away.
Access to the event, stands, and exhibition areas is free. The tasting dinner in Piazza Cavour is a set menu by reservation (35 euros per person). For information and reservations: PDL Comunicazione, tel. 080 321 6062.
The Apulian summer is hot: light clothing is recommended. The historic center is pedestrianized, ideal for an evening stroll among the stands.
