The late-summer celebration dedicated to the Molfetta calzone
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Molfetta Calzone Festival is one of the most beloved culinary events in Molfetta, a coastal city in the Metropolitan City of Bari, in the heart of Apulia. Every year, in late September, the Villa Comunale and the Piazza Garibaldi area transform into a large convivial space where the absolute star is the Molfetta calzone, a signature dish that encapsulates the history of the local peasant and maritime cuisine.
The Molfetta calzone is much more than just a baked specialty: it is a true city emblem. The traditional recipe features a dough wrapping a generous filling of boiled or fried cod, long spring onions cooked with tomato pulp, boiled turnip greens, and pitted Baresane olives. It is a balance of bold flavors, between the sweetness of the onions and the character of the fish, telling the story of the deep bond between the city and its sea.
The festival is not just about tasting. Throughout the evening, the Villa Comunale comes alive with live music, folk performances, and entertainment for families and children. The atmosphere is that of a typical Apulian village feast: shared tables, aromas wafting through the city center, and a large crowd of residents and visitors gathered for the occasion. Beyond the classic version, recent years have seen the introduction of variations such as tuna calzone, gluten-free options, and mini-portions designed for the little ones.
The event is promoted by the Pro Loco of Molfetta, with the patronage of the Municipality of Molfetta, Unpli Puglia, and the Apulia Region. Students from the local Hotel Management School also collaborate on the project, which combines gastronomic appreciation with vocational training. The Pro Loco is also working towards having the Molfetta calzone recognized as a Traditional Agri-Food Product by the Ministry of Agriculture, a testament to the cultural value of this preparation.
Over the years, the festival has adopted a particular focus on the environment, using eco-friendly materials and offering doggy bags to combat food waste. This choice makes the festival not only an occasion for great taste but also a model for responsible public events.
The Molfetta Calzone Festival is traditionally held in the latter part of September as a farewell to the summer season. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: we recommend following the Pro Loco of Molfetta's channels to learn the program as soon as it is made official.
Information regarding the 2026 edition of the Molfetta Calzone Festival has not yet been released. The Pro Loco of Molfetta usually announces dates and the program closer to the event, which is scheduled as every year in September at the Villa Comunale. For updates, we recommend following the organization's official channels.
Molfetta is easily reached by car via the SS16 Adriatica and the A14 motorway (Molfetta exit). The Molfetta railway station is served by the Adriatic line (Bari-Foggia) and is just a few minutes' walk from the Villa Comunale. The reference airport is Bari Karol Wojtyła, located about 30 km away.
Admission to the festival is free. The calzone and other offerings can be purchased on-site at the stands set up in the Villa Comunale. We recommend arriving early in the evening to avoid queues.
