Onda Teatro's performance freely inspired by Roald Dahl's "Matilda," part of the Valle Stura summer family theatre festival
In the heart of the Stura Valley, in Sambuco—one of the charming villages nestled in this Alpine valley in the province of Cuneo, Piedmont—the Piazza Municipio becomes an open-air theatre for an evening. The star of the show is "Dolcemiele," a performance by Onda Teatro featuring Silvia Elena Montagnini and directed by Bobo Nigrone, one of the most acclaimed names in Italian youth theatre.
The show is freely inspired by Roald Dahl's celebrated novel "Matilda." At the heart of the story is Miss Honey, the teacher every child dreams of: she strives to understand and support her students, but—as often happens—those who help others cannot always help themselves. Perhaps it will take a rather unique pupil to finally understand her teacher. Drawing from the book's themes, the journey of Miss Honey, Matilda, and the other characters comes to life, as their families dissolve to form a new, unconventional family built on support and love.
Suitable for ages 5 and up, "Dolcemiele" is a story about the importance of listening, understanding, and the realization that things are not always as they appear. The stage is built around frames that remain empty of images, a visual element that invites the audience to fill the void with their own imagination. It is a delicate and profound piece of theatre, capable of speaking to both children and adults alike.
The Sambuco event is one of the stops on the tour of "A Curtain Between Heaven and Earth — Theatre for Young and Old in Valle Stura," the theatre festival that has been bringing performances to the squares of the valley's small villages for over twenty years. Promoted by the Unione Montana Valle Stura, the festival involves various municipalities in the province of Cuneo—from Demonte to Pietraporzio, Aisone to Valloriate—with shows designed for families and the summer crowds visiting the Cuneo mountains.
Experiencing "Dolcemiele" in Sambuco means enjoying theatre in its most authentic form: a village square, the mountains as a backdrop, and the magic of a show designed for the whole family. It is the perfect opportunity to combine a day in Valle Stura, amidst nature and Alpine traditions, with a moment of culture and emotion.
