Four Sundays of allegorical floats in the heart of the Mugello region
The Dicomano Carnival is one of the longest-running and most beloved carnival celebrations in Tuscany. It takes place in the municipality of Dicomano, a small town in the Valdisieve area nestled between the Mugello and Casentino regions, in the Province of Florence, along the banks of the Sieve river. Every year, the heart of the town, Piazza della Repubblica, transforms into the stage for four grand parades that add color to the final Sundays of winter.
The event was born in 1964 from the commitment and enthusiasm of Don Lino Checchi, considered the founder and the historical soul of the Dicomano carnival. Don Lino passed on his passion for building allegorical floats to generations of volunteers—a craft involving papier-mâché, iron, ingenuity, and countless hours of shared labor. For over sixty years, the Dicomano Carnival Committee, entirely composed of volunteers, has carried on this legacy, keeping alive a festival that has become a core part of the town's identity.
The absolute stars of the show are the imposing allegorical floats, carefully built in the preceding months and brought to life during the parades. A unique feature that makes the Dicomano carnival special is that these are the only floats upon which children can climb and have fun in complete safety, a detail that makes it a festival truly designed for families. The parades depart from Piazza della Repubblica at 2:30 PM and wind through the town center amidst confetti, streamers, and music.
Alongside the parades, the "Dicomaschera" competition is held, dedicated to costumes: groups, couples, or individuals can participate with free registration, and the event concludes with an award ceremony for the best costume. Costume rentals for adults are also available, allowing everyone to fully immerse themselves in the carnival atmosphere.
Included in the rich calendar of events in the Mugello, the Dicomano Carnival attracts thousands of visitors every year from neighboring towns and from Florence, located about forty kilometers away. Admission is always free, remaining faithful to the popular and community-driven spirit that has characterized the event since its inception.
The 2026 edition of the Dicomano Carnival confirmed the successful formula of four grand Sunday parades. The first events were held on the last Sundays of February, with the first parade on Sunday, February 8th, continuing in the following weeks until the first Sundays of March. Every afternoon, starting at 2:30 PM, the allegorical floats paraded along Piazza della Repubblica accompanied by bands and musical groups, amidst confetti and masks.
The Dicomaschera competition was also held in 2026, with an award for the best costume, and admission remained free as always.
