Dialect comedies from the Valle del Mela in Piazzale San Francesco

The Dialect Theatre Festival in San Filippo del Mela, a small town in the province of Messina overlooking the Gulf of Milazzo, is a summer event dedicated to amateur theatre in the Sicilian dialect. For several consecutive evenings, theatrical troupes from the Valle del Mela take turns on the open-air stage, performing comedies and farces that form part of the local cultural heritage.
Promoted by the Municipality of San Filippo del Mela with the coordination of the "Le nuove immagini" theatre association, the festival was revived after several years of hiatus. The local administration has made it a highlight of its cultural calendar, viewing theatre as a "great tool for educating the soul" and an opportunity to restore the pleasure of gathering in the town's public spaces.
The programme showcases amateur talent from neighbouring towns—including Santa Lucia del Mela, Pace del Mela, and San Filippo del Mela itself—performing brilliant dialect plays. The shows, performed in the local vernacular, ironically recount the characters and situations of daily Sicilian life, with a repertoire ranging from popular farce to two-act comedies.
The setting in Piazzale San Francesco, in the town centre, makes the festival much more than a simple theatre season: it is a true village celebration, with families filling the outdoor seating on warm August evenings. The event takes place in Sicily, in the province of Messina, and serves as a prime example of how dialect theatre remains a vibrant social and identity-building force in the island's smaller towns.
At the moment, the Municipality of San Filippo del Mela has not yet announced the dates or the programme for the 2026 Dialect Theatre Festival. Following the success of the 6th edition in 2025, the event is confirmed as a staple of the town's summer cultural calendar: the programme, including participating troupes and play titles, is generally published in the weeks leading up to the event. This page will be updated as soon as official information becomes available.
Performances are held outdoors in Piazzale San Francesco, in the centre of San Filippo del Mela (ME), Sicily.
San Filippo del Mela is located along the Tyrrhenian coast of Messina, a few kilometres from Milazzo. By car, it can be reached via the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway (Milazzo exit), continuing inland. The nearest train station is Milazzo, on the Messina-Palermo line.
The festival is a popular open-air event, typically free of charge. It is recommended to check dates and details with the Municipality of San Filippo del Mela before attending.
