Dialect theatre in the heart of the Valle del Mela

The Dialect Theatre Festival in San Filippo del Mela, a small town in the province of Messina overlooking the Gulf of Milazzo, is a summer event dedicated to amateur theatre in the Sicilian dialect. For several consecutive evenings, theatrical troupes from the Valle del Mela take turns on the open-air stage, performing comedies and farces that form part of the local cultural heritage.

A rediscovered tradition

Promoted by the Municipality of San Filippo del Mela with the coordination of the "Le nuove immagini" theatre association, the festival was revived after several years of hiatus. The local administration has made it a highlight of its cultural calendar, viewing theatre as a "great tool for educating the soul" and an opportunity to restore the pleasure of gathering in the town's public spaces.

The programme showcases amateur talent from neighbouring towns—including Santa Lucia del Mela, Pace del Mela, and San Filippo del Mela itself—performing brilliant dialect plays.
