The multi-era historical pageant in the heart of the Nebrodi mountains
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Historia is a multi-era historical pageant that transforms the historic center of Santa Lucia del Mela, a village in the hinterland of the province of Messina, into a vast open-air stage. Organized by the Associazione Antiche Torri with the support of the local municipality and the Sicilian Region, the event gathers performers, musicians, and street artists every autumn to bring the centuries that shaped this corner of Sicily back to life.
The pageant is defined as multi-era: the procession guides the spectator through various historical periods, from the medieval era and the Swabian court of Frederick II to the Aragonese age. Among the figures evoked, the territory's bond with the Swabian dynasty and figures such as Pier delle Vigne stands out, in a narrative that weaves together noble families, ladies, knights, archers, and historical militias. There are also references to later periods, with the Reggimento Real Marina and its historical weapons and blank cannon fire.
The value of Historia lies in the participation of numerous Sicilian historical groups and others, who converge on Santa Lucia del Mela to create a grand collective celebration. Recent editions have featured groups such as Officina Medievale di Enna, A Maschira di Cattafi, Sicularagonensia di Randazzo, the Federico IV d'Aragona pageant of San Piero Patti, the Arcieri di San Marco d'Alunzio, Alma Bailante di Patti, and many others.
The procession crosses the most evocative streets of the historic center: from the cloister of the Sacred Heart in Piazza Milite Ignoto, it winds along via dell'Arco, piazza Regina Margherita, via Garibaldi, via Antonio Scoppa, piazza Beato Antonio Franco, via Barone Patti, and via Palombello, ending in the scenic castle courtyard that overlooks the town.
Beyond the re-enactment, Historia involves the entire community of Santa Lucia del Mela: the junior pageant dedicated to the little ones and the annual photography contest — whose winning photo becomes the official poster for the following year — have become highly anticipated events. Admission is free, and the event attracts visitors from across the province of Messina and Sicily, helping to enhance the historical heritage and medieval charm of this village in the Sicilian Region.
The dates and program for the 2026 edition of Historia have not yet been officially announced. Based on established tradition, the multi-era historical pageant will return to the historic center of Santa Lucia del Mela in autumn, featuring the participation of Sicilian historical groups, medieval music, street theater, fire shows, and the junior pageant dedicated to children. Please check the channels of the Associazione Antiche Torri and the Municipality for updates.
Santa Lucia del Mela can be reached by car via the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, taking the Milazzo exit and continuing inland for a few kilometers. The nearest train station is Milazzo, on the Tyrrhenian line, which is connected to the village by local buses.
Access to the pageant and performances is free. Comfortable clothing is recommended for walking through the narrow streets of the historic center.
The event traditionally takes place in October, during the afternoon and evening, in the historic center of Santa Lucia del Mela (Province of Messina).
