The September feast of the small Niceto Valley village in honor of its heavenly patroness

In the small municipality of Condrò, a village of a few hundred inhabitants nestled among the citrus groves of the Niceto Valley in the province of Messina, the Madonna del Tindari is venerated as the heavenly patroness. Her feast, which falls every year around September 8th (the liturgical day of the Nativity of Mary), is one of the most anticipated and well-attended events for the entire community, often drawing back many emigrants who return for the occasion.
The heart of the celebrations is the Mother Church, a building dating back to 1571 and dedicated to Mary Most Holy of Tindari. Inside, it houses a rich artistic heritage, including stucco work, a decorated wooden ceiling, and a late-Baroque altar dedicated to the Virgin. This is where the statue is kept, which is taken out in procession through the village streets on the day of the feast.
The most intense moment is the solemn procession of the statue along the streets of Condrò. According to a deeply felt tradition, the bearers make the fercolo (processional float) "sway" with specific movements, a ritual gesture that expresses fatigue, joy, and profound popular devotion all at once. The procession winds through the streets, accompanied by the sound of the brass band and the participation of the entire community.
Alongside the religious observance, a secular program enlivens the village for several days:
Devotion to the Madonna del Tindari, linked to the famous Sanctuary of the Black Madonna located on the promontory of the same name on the Tyrrhenian coast, is widespread throughout Eastern Sicily. In Condrò, it takes on the intimate and authentic character of a small village feast, where faith, identity, and a sense of belonging merge during the September days. For visitors, it is an opportunity to discover a lesser-known corner of Sicily and experience a still-genuine village procession up close.
The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: the feast traditionally takes place around September 8th.
