The patronal festival of the Borgo Antico in Milazzo, blending faith, processions, and folk traditions

The Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Festival is one of the most deeply rooted traditions in the popular devotion of Milazzo, a city in the province of Messina overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea and a gateway to the Aeolian Islands. The celebration centers on the Borgo Antico, the historic fortified core of the city that climbs toward the Castle, and is organized by the Parrocchia Nostra Signora del Santo Rosario. Here, every autumn, the neighborhood community gathers around its patron saint in a festival that deeply intertwines the religious dimension with the civic and cultural identity of the district.
The festivities do not end in a single day but follow a long preparation period. It all begins with the enthronement of the statue in the parish church, followed by the seven-day prayer (settenario) and, in the days immediately preceding the public festival, the preparatory triduo. During these evenings, the parish offers the recitation of the Holy Rosary, the chaplet, and Eucharistic celebrations, often accompanied by musical moments such as concerts by the parish choir dedicated to Mary. It is a crescendo of participation that spiritually prepares the neighborhood for the most anticipated day.
The most solemn moment is the Sunday of the public festival, generally celebrated in mid-October. The day opens at dawn with cannon fire, a traditional signal announcing the festival to the entire village, followed by the solemn Eucharistic Celebration in the morning. In the early afternoon, the most emotional moment begins: the procession of the statue of Our Lady of the Rosary, which winds through the streets of the Borgo Antico and the historic center of Milazzo. The traditional route touches Via San Domenico, Via San Giuseppe, the Castle Staircase, Piazza Roma, the Lungomare Garibaldi, and numerous other streets steeped in history, in an embrace that involves the entire city.
Alongside the liturgical dimension, there is no shortage of popular festivities. The passage of the brass band through the neighborhood streets, the decorations, the lights, and the atmosphere of sharing among residents make the day an occasion for the entire Borgo community to come together. The festivities conclude on the following Sunday with the repositioning of the statue and the traditional prize draw, a convivial moment that officially closes the event.
Participating in the Our Lady of the Rosary Festival means discovering the most authentic soul of Milazzo, far from the tourist circuits linked to the sea and the Aeolian Islands. The narrow streets of the Borgo Antico, the climb toward the Castle, and the strong bond between the inhabitants and their patron saint offer a vivid glimpse into the religious traditions of north-eastern Sicily, where faith becomes community, memory, and a popular celebration.
The festivities in honor of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary in the Borgo Antico of Milazzo return, as every year, in October. The dates and program for the 2026 edition have not yet been made official by the Parrocchia Nostra Signora del Santo Rosario.
Based on tradition, the festival should consist of a period of spiritual preparation (settenario and triduo) and culminate in a Sunday of public celebrations with cannon fire, a solemn Eucharistic celebration, and a procession of the statue along the historic streets of the Borgo and the center of Milazzo. For updates, please refer to the official parish channels and local press.
