The solemnity of the Patron Saint in the village that bears her name

In Santa Lucia del Mela, an ancient village perched on the slopes of a hill in the province of Messina, the Saint Lucy Festival is more than just a patronal feast: it is the very identity of the town, which owes its name to the young martyr from Syracuse. Every December 13th, the community gathers around the Saint with deep devotion, expressed through prayer, tradition, and rituals handed down over the centuries.
The bond between the town and Saint Lucy dates back to the Middle Ages. Tradition holds that in 1094, Count Roger, to fulfill a vow made following his victory over the Arabs, had a church dedicated to the Roman martyr built at the foot of the Castle, changing the ancient name of the place. In 1206, Frederick II of Swabia established the famous Prelatura Nullius here, the only one in Sicily, a sign of the town's religious importance. The image of the Saint is imprinted on the municipal coat of arms and appears in numerous local artworks: a fine marble statue attributed to the school of Laurana, frescoes, portals, and the polychrome wooden statue of the Sicilian school (17th-18th century), which has been restored to its original gilding.
The festivities begin with the preparatory novena, celebrated in the days leading up to the solemnity at the Church of the Capuchins. On December 13th, holy masses are held from the early hours of the morning; then, the solemn procession of the patron saint's statue begins through the village streets, accompanied by the local town band, civil and military authorities, and a crowd of faithful. The heart of the day is the solemn pontifical mass celebrated in the Church of the Annunziata. Due to the ongoing closure of the Co-cathedral for structural repairs, the main ceremonies take place in the Churches of the Capuchins and the Annunziata.
More than just an event, the Saint Lucy Festival is the moment when Santa Lucia del Mela finds itself: a town that, in the heart of winter, lights candles and faith for the Saint who bears its name, preserving one of the most heartfelt devotions in the province of Messina and all of Sicily.
