Local products with Municipal Designation on display in Piazza Cavour
The De.Co. Day - Trecate Excellence is the annual event that the Municipality of Trecate, in the Province of Novara, dedicates to its traditional products bearing the De.Co. label. The event takes place in Piazza Cavour, in the town's historic center, transforming the main square for a morning into a showcase of local flavors and crafts.
The acronym De.Co. stands for Denominazione Comunale (Municipal Designation): it is a recognition that the Municipality grants to agri-food products and traditional gastronomic preparations linked to the history, traditions, and culture of its territory. Trecate established the label in 2020 through a specific City Council resolution, approving the regulations and the distinctive logo. Since then, numerous companies and artisan businesses have applied for and obtained the certification, joining the municipal De.Co. register. The day was created precisely to promote the label and provide visibility to the businesses and products that are part of it.
During the event, institutional stalls and those of certified companies offer specialties from the Trecate area: agricultural products, preserves, honey, flour, sweets, and other local delicacies. Alongside the De.Co. exhibitors, there is also the Campagna Amica market, featuring zero-kilometer agricultural producers. It is the perfect opportunity to get to know those who farm and produce in the area up close and to buy directly from the producers.
The most anticipated moment is the tasting of paniscia, one of the most beloved traditional dishes in all of Upper Piedmont: a rich risotto made with rice, beans, vegetables, and salame della duja, a symbol of Novara's peasant cuisine. The preparation and distribution are handled by the volunteers of the "A. Geddo" Alpini Group of Trecate, whose presence gives the day a convivial, village-festival atmosphere.
The De.Co. Day is a simple and authentic event, far from commercial logic, designed to share and pass on the gastronomic traditions of Trecate. The initiative is sponsored by the Terre dell'Alto Piemonte tourist agency and the Province of Novara, confirming the value the territory places on protecting its excellence. Admission is free, and the atmosphere is that of a genuine and welcoming Piedmontese village festival.
