About Peace of Caltabellotta Re-enactment

Every late August, Caltabellotta, a charming mountain village in the province of Agrigento, travels back over seven centuries to commemorate the historic Peace of 1302, the agreement that ended the long War of the Sicilian Vespers between the Angevins and the Aragonese. Three days of grand historical pageants in costume with over a hundred participants, a treaty-signing ceremony, tightrope walker and fire-eater performances, a living museum, and medieval banquets make for an event that blends historical memory, Sicilian identity, and a powerful message of peace.

A dive into the Sicilian Middle Ages

The Days of Peace, featuring the famous Re-enactment of the Peace of Caltabellotta, transform the historic center of the town of Caltabellotta, in the province of Agrigento, into a grand open-air stage every year at the end of August. For three days, the mountain village, perched beneath its famous fortress, steps back more than seven centuries to bring one of the most significant events in Sicilian and Mediterranean history to life.

The Peace of 1302 and the Sicilian Vespers

The event celebrates the agreement signed on August 31, 1302, right here in Caltabellotta, which ended the long and bloody War of the Sicilian Vespers fought between the Angevins and the Aragonese. That treaty, the result of mediation between the great powers of the time, reshaped the political balance of the Mediterranean and handed Sicily to the Aragonese crown. The re-enactment restores the memory of this crucial turning point to the citizens and visitors alike, weaving together historical rigor and spectacular charm.

The historical pageant and the signing of the treaty

The heart of the event is the grand historical pageant in costume, which winds through the streets of the village starting from Viale Savoia to reach the Cathedral. Over a hundred performers in period attire bring to life ladies and knights, nobles and commoners, musicians and flag-wavers, recreating the atmosphere of 14th-century Sicily. In the Ruggero di Laurรฌa square, the re-enactment of the signing of the peace treaty takes place in the presence of civil and religious authorities. The event is attended by numerous mayors from the province of Agrigento and the "Peace Builders" mayors, highlighting the relevance of the message sent from Caltabellotta to the world.

Shows, living museum, and medieval flavors

  • Performances by tightrope walkers and fire-eaters and scenes of medieval life
  • Living museum with performances in the Conte Luna square
  • The theatrical show "La Rocca delle querce", performed by local youth
  • Banquets and medieval-themed menus in the village restaurants and the hamlet of Sant'Anna
  • Tastings of local products and guided tours

A village to discover

The re-enactment is also the perfect opportunity to discover Caltabellotta, one of the most fascinating villages in inland Sicily, dominated by the remains of the Norman castle and immersed in a mountain landscape of great beauty. The event is organized by the Municipality of Caltabellotta together with the Pace di Caltabellotta Association, the Pro Loco, the "I Sognattori" cultural association, and the Roncalli Comprehensive Institute.
