The Days of Peace, featuring the famous Re-enactment of the Peace of Caltabellotta, transform the historic center of the town of Caltabellotta, in the province of Agrigento, into a grand open-air stage every year at the end of August. For three days, the mountain village, perched beneath its famous fortress, steps back more than seven centuries to bring one of the most significant events in Sicilian and Mediterranean history to life.
The event celebrates the agreement signed on August 31, 1302, right here in Caltabellotta, which ended the long and bloody War of the Sicilian Vespers fought between the Angevins and the Aragonese. That treaty, the result of mediation between the great powers of the time, reshaped the political balance of the Mediterranean and handed Sicily to the Aragonese crown. The re-enactment restores the memory of this crucial turning point to the citizens and visitors alike, weaving together historical rigor and spectacular charm.
The heart of the event is the grand historical pageant in costume, which winds through the streets of the village starting from Viale Savoia to reach the Cathedral. Over a hundred performers in period attire bring to life ladies and knights, nobles and commoners, musicians and flag-wavers, recreating the atmosphere of 14th-century Sicily. In the Ruggero di Laurรฌa square, the re-enactment of the signing of the peace treaty takes place in the presence of civil and religious authorities. The event is attended by numerous mayors from the province of Agrigento and the "Peace Builders" mayors, highlighting the relevance of the message sent from Caltabellotta to the world.
The re-enactment is also the perfect opportunity to discover Caltabellotta, one of the most fascinating villages in inland Sicily, dominated by the remains of the Norman castle and immersed in a mountain landscape of great beauty. The event is organized by the Municipality of Caltabellotta together with the Pace di Caltabellotta Association, the Pro Loco, the "I Sognattori" cultural association, and the Roncalli Comprehensive Institute.
The Days of Peace with the Re-enactment of the Peace of Caltabellotta are expected to return, as per tradition, at the end of August 2026 in the historic center of the town of Caltabellotta, in the province of Agrigento. At the moment, the official dates and program for the 2026 edition have not yet been published by the organizers. Pending confirmation, it is expected that the event will feature its signature elements: the historical pageant in costume with over a hundred participants, the re-enactment of the signing of the 1302 treaty, and medieval-themed shows. Information will be updated as soon as it becomes available.
Caltabellotta is located in the hinterland of the province of Agrigento, in Sicily. By car, it can be reached from Sciacca along the SS115 and the provincial roads that climb towards the mountain village; the nearest airport is Palermo-Punta Raisi, about two hours away.
The event is traditionally held at the end of August over three days. The historical pageant and the treaty-signing ceremony take place in the early evening; theatrical performances generally take place late in the evening.
The streets of the historic center are steep and cobbled: comfortable footwear is recommended. It is advisable to book in advance at the village restaurants for the medieval menus.
