The “Nosa Madona” festival in the heart of the Valle del Chiese

In the small village of Darzo, part of the municipality of Storo in the province of Trento, the end-of-summer festival is one of the most cherished events of the year. Every third Sunday of September, the village gathers around the Madonna Addolorata, the community's co-patron saint, whose liturgical feast falls on September 15th. Locals affectionately call it the “Sagra della Nosa Madona”, and for generations, it has marked the end of the summer season in the southern part of the Valle del Chiese.
Darzo sits on a hill formed by alluvial deposits where the valley's streams converge, and it is home to about nine hundred residents. It was an independent municipality under the rule of the noble Lodron family until 1928, when it was merged with Storo. The village preserves two churches that tell its history: the 18th-century Church of San Giovanni Nepomuceno, dedicated to the patron saint celebrated on May 16th, and the medieval Church of San Michele Arcangelo. This heritage is complemented by the memory of barite mining, which shaped the surrounding mountains until 2009, and the popular legend of the “Annetta di Darzo”.
The festival is organized by the Pro Loco Darzo, an association founded in 1963 and run by a large, young board, often in collaboration with other local associations. The weekend intertwines the religious aspect—the solemn mass in honor of the Madonna Addolorata—with the festive side: food stalls featuring the flavors of the Valle del Chiese, live music, games, and gatherings for all ages. It is an authentic village festival where the Darzo community welcomes visitors and valley residents to share their traditions.
The September festival is the heart of the Pro Loco's calendar, but it is not the only event: throughout the year, the village also hosts the Children's Carnival, the Feast of the Patron Saint San Giovanni Nepomuceno on May 16th, the mountain festival, Christmas events, and the evocative Night of Saint Lucy on December 12th. A rich tapestry of celebrations that testifies to the vitality of this small Trentino community.
