The community festival in Cologna that anticipates the historic Votive Feast of the Fourth of August
Waiting for the 4th of August is the summer event in Cologna, a hamlet of the Municipality of Tenno, in the heart of the Upper Garda Trentino, in Trentino-Alto Adige (Province of Trento). The event was created as a gathering that weaves the world of volunteering with the aromas of local cuisine and a simple, authentic desire for togetherness. Conceived and carried forward by the Cologna Gavazzo Committee, the festival involves local operators, producers, associations, and volunteers who transform a late summer evening into an occasion for genuine village life.
The name "Waiting for the 4th of August" recalls the Votive Feast of the Fourth of August, a centuries-old tradition in Cologna. The local community had the votive plague shrine erected as a vow for surviving the 1630 epidemic: the shrine, decorated with devotional frescoes, remains the symbolic heart of the celebration to this day, featuring Holy Mass and a solemn procession. Around this religious memory, a popular festival has solidified over the years, blending the sacred with conviviality and rooting the community in its own history.
The soundtrack of the event is provided by the voices of the Pagada Coro Lago di Tenno, which delivers emotions that linger long after the final applause. Alongside the music, there are cultural visits, including the discovery of the Church of San Zeno, and above all, traditional Trentino cuisine: authentic dishes prepared by volunteers, with the famous canederli (bread dumplings) among the stars of the table. It is a festival that highlights local products and people, with the participation of local operators and producers.
Cologna is one of the small hamlets that make up the territory of the Municipality of Tenno, a village known for its emerald-colored lake and the picturesque medieval settlement of Canale. In a landscape of great beauty, among vineyards, olive groves, and glimpses of the Upper Garda, the Cologna festival represents an authentic piece of local community life, far from mass tourism and close to traditions. For summer events, the Municipality of Tenno also promotes a free shuttle service to encourage more sustainable mobility.
The new edition of Waiting for the 4th of August is scheduled for Saturday, August 22, 2026, in Cologna, a hamlet of the Municipality of Tenno.
