About Cuzzetiello Festival

In the small hamlet of Alvignanello, within the municipality of Ruviano, the Cuzzetiello Festival celebrates one of the most beloved symbols of Campanian popular cuisine every July: the heart of 'pane cafone' bread, hollowed out and filled with ragù, meatballs, and other delicious fillings. Established in 2023 by a group of local youths, the event combines open-air tastings, live music, dance nights, and shows, bringing summer life back to a village in the Alto Casertano area overlooking the Volturno valley.

The cuzzetiello: a complete meal inside bread

The cuzzetiello is one of the most authentic symbols of Neapolitan and Campanian popular cuisine: not just a simple sandwich, but a true complete meal encased in the heart of pane cafone. The crumb is removed, and the still-fragrant crust is filled with ragù and meatballs, along with the variations each kitchen proposes. It stems from an ancient domestic tradition: dipping crusty homemade bread into the ragù slowly simmering on the stove. A humble act that has become a small gastronomic icon over the years, now celebrated even outside of Naples.

A grassroots festival in the hamlet of Alvignanello

The Cuzzetiello Festival takes place in Alvignanello, a hamlet of the municipality of Ruviano, in the province of Caserta, Campania. Not to be confused with the nearby town of Alvignano, Alvignanello is a small village in the Alto Casertano area overlooking the Volturno valley, where the event was born in 2023 on the initiative of a group of local youths gathered around the Fessarie 'e Cafè association, later joined by Partenope Eventi. Since its first edition, the festival has been organized without public funding, relying solely on the organizers' efforts, and has had the most beautiful effect a village festival can have: bringing people, lights, and voices back to a village that risked remaining deserted in the summer.

Evenings in Piazza Del Buono

The heart of the festival is Piazza Del Buono, set up with tables and seating for comfortable dining, along with the square at the entrance to the village. Every evening, after sunset, food stands are accompanied by an entertainment program that over the years has featured group and ballroom dancing, performances by local dance schools, disco nights with hits from the seventies to the nineties, tribute bands, and live concerts. Past editions have featured, among others, Peppe Zona, Radio Funk in homage to Jamiroquai, the Jovine Full Band with the 99 Posse Zulu Crew, and the official Massimo Ranieri tribute band.

What to taste

  • Cuzzetiello with ragù, the classic version with long-simmered sauce and meatballs;
  • variations of fillings proposed year after year by the organizers;
  • other local specialties of the Alto Casertano area, accompanied by local wine.

Portions are generous and prices remain typical of a village festival: you eat sitting in the square, amidst music and conversation, with a continuous turnover of visitors arriving from the nearby towns of the Volturno valley and even from Caserta and Naples.

When it takes place

The Cuzzetiello Festival is held every year in July, generally in the second half of the month and always spanning a weekend. In 2024 it took place from July 18th to 21st, in 2025 from July 24th to 27th, and the fourth edition in 2026 was announced for July 24th to 26th. Exact dates and the evening program are communicated by the organizers on social media channels each year, usually a few weeks before the event: those wishing to attend should check them in advance.

A village to discover

Alvignanello is not only alive during the festival: in recent years, the village has also hosted a small film festival, a sign of the vitality of this community in the municipality of Ruviano. Those arriving for the cuzzetiello can take the opportunity for a stroll through the alleys, a look at the surrounding countryside, and to discover a little-visited corner of inland Campania, far from the most crowded tourist circuits.

Cuzzetiello Festival — edition 2026

The fourth edition of the Cuzzetiello Festival took place in Alvignanello, a hamlet of Ruviano in the province of Caserta, from Friday, July 24th to Sunday, July 26th, 2026. Three evenings dedicated to 'pane cafone' bread stuffed with ragù and meatballs, with food stands set up in the village and the usual accompaniment of music and entertainment in the square. The detailed program of the evenings was not released on online channels.

Three nights of cuzzetiello in Alvignanello

Over the weekend from July 24th to 26th, 2026, the hamlet of Alvignanello, in the municipality of Ruviano, hosted the fourth edition of the Cuzzetiello Festival. The formula remained the one that ensured the success of the first three editions: food stands open in the evening around Piazza Del Buono, cuzzetiello stuffed with ragù as the main dish, and evenings animated by music and shows, in one of the most followed food and wine events in the Alto Casertano area.

A long-awaited appointment

Compared to the four evenings of 2025, the event focused on three days coinciding with the weekend, remaining within the July window that the Alvignanello community has chosen since 2023. This year too, the festival was included in the event calendars of the province of Caserta and highlighted by the local press as one of the main events of the Campanian weekend.

Program

The evening-by-evening details of the fourth edition were not published online: the organizers, the Fessarie 'e Cafè association together with Partenope Eventi, usually announce the program on their social channels a few days before the opening.
