The Patronal Feast of Saint Vitus and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is the most cherished event in Partignano, a small hamlet within the Municipality of Pignataro Maggiore, in the province of Caserta, in the heart of the Terra di Lavoro region of Campania. For three days, between the end of summer and the beginning of autumn, the narrow streets of the village fill with lights, stalls, music, and the scent of homemade sweets: it is a festival the community prepares for all year, drawing back emigrants and families originally from the neighborhood who return specifically for the occasion.
This is not a tourist-driven event, but a form of popular devotion layered over centuries. The parish church of Saint Vitus, the religious heart of the hamlet, has been documented since 1126: until 1460, Partignano depended on Calvi, then on Capua, and only became part of the territory of Pignataro Maggiore in 1808. The cult of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was added later, towards the end of the 19th century, when the construction of the new church began: since then, the two patrons have been celebrated together, on distinct but consecutive days.
The liturgical calendar places Saint Vitus on June 15th, but in Partignano, the feast has always been celebrated on the third Sunday of September. The reason is agricultural rather than religious: in June, the village was busy with the harvest and field work, whereas in September, once the hardest season was over, the community could finally celebrate. This choice is found in many towns in the Alto Casertano area and links the saint to the agricultural cycle, the grape harvest, and the gathering of walnuts.
The structure of the festival repeats with few variations from year to year and is now part of the village's intangible heritage:
No Saint Vitus feast is complete without pizza figliata. It is the traditional dessert of the village and the Alto Casertano area: a long roll of dough—made with flour, wine, and spices—stuffed with walnuts and honey and coiled upon itself, traditionally prepared in autumn when the walnuts were harvested. During the festivities, families prepare it at home, and a dedicated food festival offers it for tasting alongside other local specialties, such as guanti and struffoli. The same recipe is at the heart of Pizza Figliata al Borgo, the event organized by the same committee in December, which reached its fourteenth edition in 2025: a sign of how alive the tradition remains all year round.
Partignano is a small settlement that preserves the layout of the old hamlet: alleys, courtyards, stone portals, and the church as the fulcrum of collective life. Piazza Alcide De Gasperi and Via Castelluccio are the places where gastronomic events and shows are concentrated. All around, the landscape is that of the Volturno plain and the hills of Calvi Risorta, just a few kilometers from the ancient Cales and the Appian Way archaeological park.
The festival is promoted by the Saint Vitus and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Festival Committee, which is renewed every year and works alongside the parish—led by Father Giulio Ferrara—and local associations, including the Arianova Cultural Association and L'Officina dell'Amore. Updated information on the program is published on the committee's Facebook page in the weeks leading up to the festivities.
The Patronal Feast of Saint Vitus and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart of Jesus returns to Partignano, a hamlet of Pignataro Maggiore (province of Caserta), on the weekend of the third Sunday of September, which in 2026 falls on Sunday, September 20th. As per established tradition, the festivities are spread over three days, from Saturday to Monday, with Sunday dedicated to Saint Vitus and Monday to Our Lady of the Sacred Heart.
The organization is entrusted to the Saint Vitus and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Festival Committee, which works in conjunction with the village parish. As of the writing of this entry, the official 2026 program has not yet been published: exact dates, times, names of guest artists, and pyrotechnic companies will be released, as every year, in the weeks leading up to the feast on the committee's Facebook page and on posters displayed in the village.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition has not yet been released by the organizing committee. Based on the village's established tradition, the festivities usually include:
Times, names of musical guests, and final details will be communicated by the committee closer to the event.
Partignano is a hamlet of Pignataro Maggiore (CE). By car, take the A1 Milan-Naples motorway, exit at Capua or Caianello, then continue on the provincial roads towards Pignataro Maggiore and Calvi Risorta. By train, the reference station is Sparanise, on the Rome-Naples line via Cassino, just a few kilometers from the village.
Participation in the rites, processions, concerts, and fireworks displays is free. Only gastronomic tastings and products from the stalls are subject to payment.
The village is small and the internal streets are closed to traffic during the processions: it is advisable to park along the access roads and continue on foot. Do not miss the chance to taste the pizza figliata, available during the festival days and at the December event.
