The cuddiruni festival in the heart of Realmonte
The Cuddiruni Fest was born in Realmonte, a small town on the Agrigento coast in the province of Agrigento (Sicily), to celebrate one of the symbolic products of local culinary culture: the cuddiruni, the thick, closed focaccia of the peasant tradition. The event, promoted by the Municipality of Realmonte, takes place in Piazza Umberto I and offers two evenings dedicated to taste, conviviality, and the rediscovery of the territory's gastronomic roots.
The cuddiruni is a typical local focaccia, available in two versions. The savory one is thick and closed, stuffed with tomato, onion, Sicilian pecorino, and anchovies; the sweet one, rarer and less known, is a thin flatbread enriched with sugar, cinnamon, and raisins. The entire identity of the festival revolves around this product, which has been part of the Realmonte table for generations.
Both days kick off at 7:30 PM with the opening of food stalls, children's entertainment, and a wide range of street food dedicated to traditional flavors. The experience is both immersive and educational: there are masterclasses on dough preparation and the use of Sicilian Pecorino, in-depth sessions on the history of the product, and meetings with operators and industry experts.
Cuddiruni Fest gives space to the local production network with an exhibition area featuring about fifteen local companies, including dairies and artisan shops. Some of the best-known restaurants in Realmonte offer cooking shows exploring the encounter between the cuddiruni and seafood cuisine, with tastings paired with wines and spirits from the province of Agrigento.
The event is funded by the Regional Department of Productive Activities of the Sicilian Region as part of the "Sicilia che Piace 2026" initiative, with artistic direction by Marco Gallo. According to the municipal administration, the goal is to enhance the short supply chain, support local micro-enterprises, and raise awareness of the quality and history of the cuddiruni, with the ambition of transforming the event into a recurring annual appointment for Realmonte and the entire Agrigento coast.
The first edition of the Cuddiruni Fest enlivened Piazza Umberto I in Realmonte on June 20 and 21, 2026, starting at 7:30 PM. Both evenings offered food stalls, traditional street food, and entertainment for children.
On Saturday, June 20, the cooking show dedicated to the cuddiruni, the talk "The roots of flavors, food and wine tourism, and the rediscovery of traditions," and the concert by the HMORA Band were held. On Sunday, June 21, the debate "Sicilian food and wine in the world" and, in closing, the concert by the CENTOQUATTRO Band took place. The two days included masterclasses on dough preparation and Sicilian Pecorino, and an exhibition area with about fifteen local companies.
